The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has contracted Lockheed Martin to supply theTerminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missiles to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

The contract, announced Friday by the Department of Defense, is worth nearly $1 billion million and covers an undisclosed THAAD FMS KSA Phase I long lead items, obsolescence, tooling and test equipment, key personnel, line requalification activities, initial training development, System Integration Lab and testbeds, three-level maintenance concept, exportability, and early engineering development.

According to DoD’s statement, the performance period is from Feb. 28, 2019, through Oct. 31, 2026.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced in an Oct 6, 2017 statement that the Government of Saudi Arabia has requested a possible sale of 44 THAAD launchers, 360 THAAD Interceptor missiles, 16 THAAD Fire Control and Communications Mobile Tactical Station Group and 7 AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars.

This sale will substantially increase Saudi Arabia’s capability to defend itself against the growing ballistic missile threat in the region. THAAD’s exo-atmospheric, hit-to-kill capability will add an upper-tier to Saudi Arabia’s layered missile defense architecture and will support modernization of the Royal Saudi Air Defense Force (RSADF).

The THAAD missile system is a land-based platform capable of intercepting ballistic missiles both inside and just outside the atmosphere.

The THAAD element provides a globally-transportable, rapidly-deployable capability to intercept ballistic missiles inside or outside the atmosphere during their final, or terminal, phase of flight. THAAD is strictly a defensive weapon system. The system uses hit-to-kill technology where kinetic energy destroys the incoming target.

This means the same quality and services as for the US army THAAD..

u.s will deploy downgraded thaad to saudia .Original will be only for their own use and they will never sell it to Muslim world

Everything is well checked, nothing downgraded..it is the original and same as the US deployed ones..

Check is done by u.s as saudis have no knowledge to determine whether it is original or clone copy of actual system used by u.s.

I will agree that you personally has no knowledge about the System, so do not put experts with you in the same bag..

KSA always get US systems fitting its own specs and requirements.. this you can be sure about.. and take a look at the price..$15 billion for 7 batteries, 44 launchers, 7 radars and much much more.. with TOT _excluding the missiles_.. with this amount KSA could have purchased 24 S-400 batteries.. but the requirements are very specific for its needs..

After the recent PAF vs IAF tussle, should anybody have any doubt over the capability of the "export" versions of the defense tech?????

Well yes in two particular cases the UAE with its F-16 Block 60 and KSA with its F-15 SA as good examples of best co developed export systems, and it goes like this for every Saudi and Imarati procurement, be it from the US or elsewhere.. it is always tailor-made due to the purchase power.. And BTW the US takes it as a pride to sell high quality systems, it never cheats , instead it will refuse to sell..And I think if one is willing to pay the price, a similar arrangement exists with Russia and China..But you have a valid point there, self made is better when one has more than just the financial means.. and that is coming soon to Arabia in General with all the preparations and will we are witnessing today.. Turkey is almost there but not yet, it still depends on others for almost 35% of its components..And Pakistan has the help of China.. that is how it works till you get totally independent if ever possible now a days due to the very fast technological progress and the world village environ..
