PESHAWAR: TTP on Thursday claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on a police post in northern Pakistan that martyred three police officers.

Attackers threw grenades at a police outpost near the Afghan border in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and entered the premises where a suicide bomber detonated explosives, according to police.

They said the number of wounded was not yet known. In November, banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), said it would no longer abide by a months-long ceasefire with the Pakistani government.

TTP militants have been waging a campaign of bombings and suicide attacks for over a decade in a bid to run Pakistan under a harsh brand of Islamic law. They have ramped up attacks after calling off the ceasefire brokered by the Afghan Taliban in May.

Pakistan’s military has launched periodic offensives in regions along the Afghan border that have served as safe havens for militants.

January 21, 2023

At least one policeman was martyred and two others were injured in a gun attack on a checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda district, Aaj News reported on Saturday.

The terrorists opened fire at a checkpost on Nowshera Road in Dheri Zardad, police said.

Resultantly, a police constable identified as Imran Khan lost his life while two others — Yousuf Ali and Rameez Khan — were injured, confirmed Charsadda police spokesperson Saifullah Khan.

After the attack, a heavy police contingent reached the site and began the search operation on a large scale, the police said.

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to the statistics released by an Islamabad-based independent think tank – Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) – the year 2022 witnessed a 28 percent increase in terror attacks across the country compared to the number of terror incidents in 2021.

The report stated that terror incidents increased by 88 percent in Balochistan and 54 percent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during a single month of December alone in 2022.

Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed most of the terror attacks that were carried out in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In response to the increase in terrorism across the country, 16 security forces actions were reported in which 39 suspected militants were killed and 47 others were apprehended.

Pakistan witnessed a 28 percent increase in terror attacks across the country in 2022, while the highest number of 44 percent of militants’ attacks was reported in a single month of December, a report said.

January 22, 2023

A patrol van of the Badaber police station in Peshawar narrowly escaped a bomb blast on Sunday, the police said.

According to a statement issued by the Peshawar Capital City Police, Nasir Khan — in charge of the Badaber’s Shaikhan checkpost — was patrolling in Gula Khan Zangal, an area bordering Khyber Agency, when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near his vehicle.

“Khan’s vehicle was slightly damaged in the blast. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported,” it said.

Police teams have arrived at the crime site to collect evidence and the area has been cordoned off. “The incident is being investigated closely,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the bomb disposal squad (BDS) said that approximately one kilogram of explosives was used in the blast

Since the talks with the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) broke down in November, the militant group has intensified its attacks, particularly targeting the police in KP and areas bordering Afghanistan.

Last night, a policeman was martyred and two others were injured when unidentified assailants attacked a police post in Dheri Zardad locality of Charsadda.

Last week, a deputy superintendent of police and two constables were martyred when militants, armed with automatic assault weapons, targeted the Sarband police station on the outskirts of the province’s capital, Peshawar late at night.

Officials said the militants, equipped with advanced weapons, including thermal weapon sights, carried out a ‘coordinated’ attack.

On Jan 10, unknown militants attacked the Yarik police station in Dera Ismail Khan with rifles and missiles. However, no loss of life was reported.

A soldier of Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in general area Jani Khel of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district on Monday, the military said.

“Sepoy Gul Sher, a 24-year-old resident of Khyber district, embraced shahadat [in the incident],” military’s media, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a statement.

Sanitisation of the area is being carried out to eliminate any terrorists in the area, it added.

The incident comes two days after a policeman embraced martyrdom while two of his colleagues sustained injuries as another check-post came under terrorists’ attack in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda district.

District Police Officer (DPO) Charsadda Suhail Khalid told The Express Tribune that terrorists on a motorbike opened fire at a check-post manned by three policemen in Dheri Zardad in Charsadda, injuring all of them.

The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

The TTP, which has ideological linkages with the Afghan Taliban, executed more than 100 attacks last year, most of which happened after August when the group’s peace talks with the Pakistan government began to falter. The ceasefire was formally ended last year on November 28 by the TTP.
