Mumbai: India's external debt rose 2.4 percent or $5.3 billion to $229.9 billion for the fiscal ended March 31, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said Tuesday.

India, which has an external debt equivalent to 22 percent of its gross domestic product, was already the fifth most indebted country in the world in 2007, the central bank said in a statement.

The current account - which includes components like external trade deficit and remittances from overseas - had a deficit of $29.82 billion for last fiscal, compared to a deficit of $17.03 billion in the previous period.

The capital account - which comprises items like foreign investment, external loans and foreign assistance - had a surplus of $9.15 billion for 2008-09 compared to a surplus of $107.94 billion in the year-ago period.

I wonder what was the intention of the post...by our friend... Anyways....

China's outstanding external debt reached 374.66 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2008, up 0.28 percent, or 1.04 billion U.S dollars from a year earlier, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) announced Friday.

Long and medium-term external debt, which accounted for 43.74 percent of the total, stood at 163.9 billion U.S. dollars, up 6.74 percent, or 10.3 billion U.S. dollars.

Short-term external debt, however, fell 4.23 percent, or 9.3 billion U.S. dollars year on year to 210.8 billion U.S. dollars.

In 2008, the newly-added debts increased by 0.81 percent year on year, or 291 million U.S. dollars, to 36.3 billion U.S. dollars.

The nation repaid principals for long and medium-term debt of 23.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 14.92 percent and interests 4.15 billion U.S. dollars, down 16.22 percent, the SAFE said.

so India is trying to divert its trade from china as its finding more markets in west.

Its always good to address a diversified market.... it reduces the risk and dependence on a single unidirectional market....also it gives growth opportunities.:agree:

Now let's talk about Foreign Reserve. My intention is very clear, and that is to point out the true reason for these pointless actions. Protectionism is harmful, but complete exposure is also dangerous. What we need is a balance.

Strategic and key industries need to be supported. Excess and competitive industries benefit from external trade. :yahoo:

Apart from dairy products India has banned Chinese electronic goods like mobile handset, camera, computer hard ware parts etc. This is a breach of bilateral trade deal.

China must ban each and every Indian products in retaliation.

NO to India.

Please understand why this is so before getting all twisted about it....

A lot of cheaply made chinese electronics such as mobile phones especially dont have any serial numbers etc....
Without these serial numbers, one can sell these in the black/gray market with a free hand.....terrorists from our neighboring countries use these to make phone bombs to massacre our citizens....Now....what is so bad in doing this....Let China trade with us using some reliable products where we can maintain accountability...and we have no problem!!!

Now why do you have a problem with this.....I read somewhere that you're Indian as well....dont you think this law is protecting you and your family from an unfortunate incedence?

Prevention is better than cure....some smart fellow once said!!

Okay but the milk products is lame. This was over a year ago, and it's been LONG time since this was cleaned up. Also USA and every country have bad products. J&J (johnson and johnson) have hair products that is poisonous and carciogenic - and was banned by China. I don't want to point figures and expose more stuff, just saying this has little to do with "quality" and more to do with "negative PR".

Futhermore, the no EMEI #. This is more for Iraqi and Afghan people's resistance.

Let's cool it. :)

The FDA alert said some Chinese producers watered down milk and then added melamine to increase the nitrogen content, giving the appearance of normal protein levels in tests. Much of it ended up in infant formula and dried milk powder used in making other food products.

More than 13 countries in Asia and elsewhere have found melamine-contaminated ingredients from China in such products as chocolate, yogurt, frozen desserts, biscuits, cake and cookies, the agency said.

U.S. Restricts China Milk Products - WSJ.com

This is 8 months old news, but first impression is very important. In 8 months countries/markets find ways to compensate the difference in the market and just like India and US is also taking the same precausions. In order for China to re-enter these markets, it has to do more PR, then just threaten countries to forcefully buy. I guess the old habits of communism pops up when someone says no to them.....

Yo Sinoindusriendship dude:
Okay but the milk products is lame.
33000 kids sick and a few died...ya pretty lame
have bad products. J&J (Johnson and Johnson) have hair products that is poisonous and carciogenic
Were they produced in china by any chance. If they were then i am not surprised

Many J&J products are produced in china.

Or ...Or ...you could just add a IMEI number to the Chinese cellphone and sell thin in India..What say?

Do you want to imply that Chinese cellphone are only made for terrorist acivites ?

So if I have read your posts correctly you agree that Chinese products are defected and you want to change the topic of the thread to India's trade deficit ?

If this is not what you ment then please stick to the topic .... instead of derailing it.......trolling is not really appreciated here
