Latest report's summary is out. Bad but better again, down 22% from last year in cultivated hectares. 2008 had been down 19% from 2007 so there's a trend beginning to emerge. Entire regions are poppy free and the total provinces "poppy free" is up to 22 from 18 last year.

Prices are beginning to BOTTOM. Yield is higher though.

Helmand is WAAAAAAY down from last year when it had over 103,000 hectares planted. Now 69,833 hectares. This is significant.

The gains for Helmand represent the culmulative gains for the nation. Kandahar was UP 5,000 hectares and Badghis emerged as a new player, going from 500 hectares to 5,000. Other modest increases in a some provinces led to effectively canceling out improvements made overall...

...except for Helmand's notable decrease.
