so no, when Ukraine went full pro NATO knowing this would provoke Russia they didn't do it for the sake of some ATGMs (which they could buy anyway without being the enemy of any one), they did it for the sake of NATO membership and that is what NATO promised them.

NATO didn't tell it's puppets in Ukraine "provoke Russia for 8 years and then we promise to give you ATGMs", they promised them FULL NATO membership yet for eight years, EIGHT YEARS, they didn't make Ukraine a member.

Did they really think that the USA/NATO were willing to risk WWIII and nuclear annihilation just to protect poor Ukraine? For USA this was a win-win preposition but not for the EU. EU now has to give up cheap Russian energy and has start ramping spending on defense. They can no longer free load of the USA in this area. EU has to increase this defense spending at the same time it is dealing with ongoing sovereign debt problems and demographic decline.
