PPP's Asif Ali Zardari addresses a rally in Sadiqabad. — DawnNewsTV

Former president Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday cast doubts over the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government completing its term, saying: "I can't see this captain [Imran Khan] being able to manage [this government] for long."

In today's world, Zardari said, a government that did not deliver has to step down. "He [Prime Minister Khan] will not be able to manage the economy, nor will he be able to hold up to the false commitments he made," said Zardari while addressing a PPP rally in Sadiqabad.

The PPP co-chairperson also criticised the premier for the latter's statement on taking 'U-turns'.

Last month, the prime minister had said that Adolf Hitler and Napolean Bonaparte failedbecause they "they did not change their strategies according to the situation". "Why doesn't history remember Hitler and Napolean as heroes?" asked the PPP co-chairperson. "Because it was not just a matter of one war. Hitler led to the murder of 55 million people [...] the blood of so many humans was shed. [Imran Khan] should think about this, value human beings."

Zardari said that the prime minister had read "a couple of books but could not understand a thing".

'Give rights to provinces'
He demanded the government fulfil its promise of creation of a South Punjab province.

"You [PTI] stole our slogan [of creation of South Punjab province]," Zardari claimed. "We said great, you take this step, someone should. Now they don't have the courage.

"Why don't they announce [a separate province]? Why don't they divide Punjab's budget? But they never intended to [act on their promise]. They don't have any understanding of politics."

The former president declared that his party alone had given rights to the provinces and pulled the country out of the crises it faced during Pervez Musharraf's government. Zardari promised that if the PPP came to power again, it would ensure that the provinces, which produce gas and water, received royalties.

He said that the PPP government "held no political prisoners, nor did it think of holding anyone accountable

Whats the progress on south punjab? I have read that they will get a separate budget from next year.
Also it is shameful for Zardari to ask for more rights for provinces when his party does not share a portion of the provincial budget with the Benazir Income Support Fund, which comes out from the federal government. There are other province that can do better with those transfers.

Why doesn't this Mr 10% look at himself and set the standards of living in Sindh before lecturing other's this thief had his chances so many times but was too busy building his empire with illegal wealth with fake accounts.

I hope cases against him are finished soon, and this Daku will be locked up in jail where he belongs.

Zardari and Nawaz Sharif are criminals.

Pakistan is perhaps one of the few countries which gives its high profile criminals such public space. If our society was just and there was rule of law, daku like him would be in jail. I hope we see him soon where he belongs - the jail.

Today I had a good chat with a distant relative in Pakistan who has spent years involved in politics. He neve stood himself but was a 'political worker'. He gave me a very on the ground lowdown on his views. Here is summary -

  • Money wins elections in 'swing constituencies'. The way it works is electables have connections with people that matter in their districts. They have the deep knowledge of the local scene. Money paid to the right people will bring with it blocks of votes and muscle men hired will supress or force voting patterns. At no point is the election decided by the big issues that matter. Connections, social networks, money are decisive. Those who stand in elections spenmd enormous money but they know that if they win they will gouge 10 times that much from the public treasury.
  • Imran Khan is too straight and absolutely not cut out for such dirty politics. His vision does not matter in the least on the ground in vast swathes of the country. However the army was alarmed about where the country was headed. Pakistan was headed towards a economic meltdown as Zardari and Nawaz had literally sucked the blood out of the country to buy apartments, mansions in UK, Dubai, Europe.#
  • Pakistan was headed for a ethnic warfare beyond the Karachi Mojahir/Pashtun/Sindhi/Baloch tussle. This time it would tear at the very heart of the state. This threat was building up in Khyber Pakhtunkwa province. The genesis was the fighting in tribal areas but there was danger it could expand. PTM were a warning sign of this. If Pashtun nationalism took off it would risk the very heart of the Pakistani state. With Afghanistan and India fomenting this alarm bells at GHQ rang loud.
  • The army then in conjunction with the establishment decided to help PTI into power. Not so by cheating but by leveling the pplaying field to defeat PML-N and PPP who have built expertise in corrupting the electoral process and have the infrastructure to bend the elections their way. Which assures both get a chance to keep raping Pakistan. Given PTI and IK's inexperiance in this dirty game of politics the army played a role as umpire to offset the dirty tactics of both parties.
I wonder what others think about this. I confess I was surprised about his views on the role of the army and the danger of ethnic trouble that Pakistan faced.
