Bangladesh delegation along with Bangladesh Army officers in Kolkata to participate in the celebrations

KOLKATA:
Expressing gratitude to the Indian Armed Forces, members of a visiting Bangladesh delegation today said that the country would not have attained liberation from Pakistan as fast as it did without the Indian forces.

Stating that Bangladesh has not forgotten the contribution of Indian Armed Forces, Bangladesh lawmaker Quazi Rosy said that India extended all help to the people of erstwhile East Pakistan to attain freedom.

"Without you (Indian Armed Forces), we would not have been able to attain independence so fast. Vietnam fought for nine years and we fought for nine months only and it was possible because of you," Rosy, head of a Bangladesh delegation for 'Vijay Diwas' (victory day) celebrations to mark India's win over Pakistan in the 1971 war and birth of Bangladesh, said.

A freedom struggle by the Bengali-speaking majority in East Pakistan against the atrocities committed by Pakistan forces had started in March 1971.

The war between India and Pakistan, that commenced on December 3, 1971, ended within two weeks with Lt Gen AAK Niazi, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC-in-C) East Pakistan Army, signing the instrument of surrender on December 16.

"The Rohingyas came to Bangladesh, we gave them food and shelter, but you gave us more during our struggle," she said while describing how two crore refugees who fled the Pakistani atrocities in which lakhs of Bengali-speaking people were killed and thousands of women raped, were given shelter, food and security in India.

"We had no money and used to go to shops in the streets of Kolkata seeking medicines and dry food for the Muktijoddhas (freedom fighters) who were fighting for our freedom and they whole-heartedly supported us with the provisions," an emotional Rosy said.

Celebrations marking India's win against Pakistan in the 1971 war and birth of Bangladesh

Several other 'Muktijoddhas', who are part of the delegation along with officers of Bangladesh Armed Forces, are in the city to participate in the celebrations to mark India's win against Pakistan in the 1971 war and birth of Bangladesh.

Former Army Chief General Shankar Roychowdhury, while recounting his experiences of the 1971 military operations, said that for mutual security interests and a secure future, the two countries must remain the best of friends.

Lt Gen M M Naravane, GOC-in-C of Eastern Command, said that he was a young boy when the 1971 war took place. "My father was in the Air Force and was posted at the Operations (Ops) room in Delhi and I would wait eagerly for him to come back home to hear some more war stories," he said.

"To hear firsthand accounts by the Muktijoddhas and war veterans recount their first hand experiences send shivers down the spine," Lt Gen Naravane said at the Eastern Command headquarter Fort William, where the Bangladeshi delegation and war veterans came together to share their experiences.

He said that the Indian Army would not have been able to achieve what it did within such a short time without the cooperation and participation of the Muktijoddhas.

Saying that to make them happy as Indians like to be praised.

Yes they played role coming in last week of the war. Where were they before? By the time they came in the punjabistAnis already tired and on last leg doing all the evil crimes they've committed and BANGLADESH freedom fighters were going to pounce on them like tigers to finish the kill off.

My biggest hate for them is why did India let the 90k cowards go free they should have been taken by Mukti bahini and given them a good treatment. Because of India these Pakistani criminals survived !! So the pak!s should be grateful to the Indians instead.

This member has been warned numerous times before about his disgusting anti-Pakistan posts. He flies under the radar being Bengali as we don't have as many trolls from this segment but just looks what he writes without any provocation. I've banned him for quite a while now but I would suggest we make it permanent.

Honestly, we don't need your certificate. We know what we did and don't care you being grateful or not, it's better you stop pole vaulting to this side.

Busy feeding you lot who came flooding to WB, Assam etc... etc... And made sure that'll be 'last week of war'.

What he said about Indian military is true. India just sneaked in at the last moment to claim victory.

Indira Gandhi had asked the military to intervene right at the beginning in April but Sam Manekshaw said India will lose against Pakistan if they go to war at that moment. By December, Pakistan military were already reduced to the cantonments in the major cities while the Pakistani troops were going through fatigue. That's when India intervened and the Indian troops being escorted by Mukti Bahini through to Dhaka.

Even Yahya Khan agreed to give independence to East Pakistan by February 1972 in his meeting with Nixon in November. Moreover, Pakistanis are not that kind of people to surrender in just two weeks of fighting.

Eh! What victory? Your movement wasn't going in any direction. And who trained Mukti Bahini? Yourselves?

Nice try, but India intervened the moment Pakistan launched an airstrike on the western frontier. We had no reason to intervene in a direct conflict. But Pakistan flinched. Besides, India put a naval blockade which prevented the movement of troops from West to East. Here, you claim waaah! Mukti Bahini single-handedly fought off a well-trained army which had all the support from the US.

Nope. Yahya never promised anything to Nixon, rather, Nixon was already giving a free hand to Pakistan despite allegations of genocide. As Henry kissinger pointed out "Nixon said, To all hands, don’t squeeze Yahya at this time" " the President has a special feeling for President Yahya. One cannot make policy on that basis, but it is a fact of life"

Mukti Bahini was not really an entirely unprofessional insurgent group. It was formed by the defecting Bengali officers and troops from Pakistani military as well as retired Bengali officers who had the same training as the Pakistani armed forces. Mukti Bahini also included the famous East Bengal Regiment that won the highest number of gallantry awards during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. These defected officers and troops formed the core of the force.

The civilian fighters were trained the by these Bengali officers. India provided with the land and logistics for training.

Manekshaw explained the dangers. Owing to the outbreak of monsoon, troop movements would be confined to roads, the rest of the land would be marshy, and the rivers would become like oceans.

“The Air Force will not be able to operate. I will be tied down,” he added.

Summing up the situation, the outspoken Manekshaw said, “If India wages a war now, I guarantee you 100% defeat.

US didn't provide any support to Pakistan. They already had intelligence report to know by which time Pakistan military would surrender. Accordingly, they just fielded the 7th fleet near Bay of Bengal at the last moment knowing that by the time the fleet reaches near shores, Pakistan would have already surrendered. It was not Nixon rather Kissinger who was calling the shots.

East Pakistan would be given independence, Pak president told US in November 1971
