PESHAWAR: The cricketer-turned-philanthropist and politician, Imran Khan, and his team members on Wednesday received tremendous response for the first cancer hospital when Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and other individuals donated Rs90 million for the project, which the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust began to execute in the provincial metropolis.

The chief minister and other philanthropists including businessmen, industrialists, doctors and people of other professions gave generous response when Imran Khan, who is the chairman of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, made public appeal for donations for the cancer hospital at the ground-breaking ceremony of this state-of-the-art hospital in Peshawar.

The Shaukat Khanum Trust would build this first cancer hospital in Peshawar and the second in the country for which the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had allocated 50 kanals of land in the Hayatabad Township.

Senior officials of the trust later told The News, they never expected the chief minister and people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would so generously donate for this mega humanitarian project. “We were expecting three to four million rupees from the people. From the provincial government we did not expect any financial support as it had already contributed by providing the precious land for the hospital,” remarked Khwaja Nazir Ahmad, senior manager media and public relations.

The chief minister donated Rs50 million while other individuals present on the occasion gave Rs40 million for the hospital. The Shaukat Khanum Trust has estimated Rs400 million cost of the hospital to be built in phases. The first phase would take three years to complete and the facility is expected to be operational in 2014.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Ameer Haider Hoti said he would speak to the federal government to exempt from taxes all the equipment to be imported by the trust for the facility. The first cancer hospital in Peshawar, Hoti hoped, would reduce financial and physical pain for many poor people in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Imran Khan said building a cancer hospital for the needy people was his dream as treatment of this deadly disease was expensive and was out of the reach of the poor.
