Work starts on first cancer hospital in KP

PESHAWAR: The cricketer-turned-philanthropist and politician, Imran Khan, and his team members on Wednesday received tremendous response for the first cancer hospital when Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and other individuals donated Rs90 million for the project, which the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust began to execute in the provincial metropolis.

The chief minister and other philanthropists including businessmen, industrialists, doctors and people of other professions gave generous response when Imran Khan, who is the chairman of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, made public appeal for donations for the cancer hospital at the ground-breaking ceremony of this state-of-the-art hospital in Peshawar.

The Shaukat Khanum Trust would build this first cancer hospital in Peshawar and the second in the country for which the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had allocated 50 kanals of land in the Hayatabad Township.

Senior officials of the trust later told The News, they never expected the chief minister and people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would so generously donate for this mega humanitarian project. “We were expecting three to four million rupees from the people. From the provincial government we did not expect any financial support as it had already contributed by providing the precious land for the hospital,” remarked Khwaja Nazir Ahmad, senior manager media and public relations.

The chief minister donated Rs50 million while other individuals present on the occasion gave Rs40 million for the hospital. The Shaukat Khanum Trust has estimated Rs400 million cost of the hospital to be built in phases. The first phase would take three years to complete and the facility is expected to be operational in 2014.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Ameer Haider Hoti said he would speak to the federal government to exempt from taxes all the equipment to be imported by the trust for the facility. The first cancer hospital in Peshawar, Hoti hoped, would reduce financial and physical pain for many poor people in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Imran Khan said building a cancer hospital for the needy people was his dream as treatment of this deadly disease was expensive and was out of the reach of the poor.

Chairman PTI Imran Khan (official) at the Ground Breaking Ceremony of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in PESHAWAR held on 9th March 2011. After Lahore and Karachi this will be the 3rd branch of SKM, InshAllah

At least there's someone in Pakistan who thinks for KP and that's the most pleasing news I've heard in quite a while. Thank you Imran Khan, thank you very much.

People from Afghanistan will also greatly benefit from this hospital considering the lack of health affairs in their country and travelling they had to do to go to Karachi or Lahore. I've seen about 70-80% patients visiting Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) in Peshawar are from Afghanistan - RMI is one of the best in the world for Heart related diseases.

yes, it is a good hospital(RMI), but highly expensive. Very small number of people who can afford goes to that hospital. Otherwise, those dont have money simply go to the doctors in hayatabad and board(spelling?) and sometimes dabgary(spelling?) with not much a good outcome for them, those doctors are basically rip off.

KP overtook Sindh in this regard. While IK has been trying for the last 4 years to establish his hospital here, KP gave him free land and now the work has begun. Stop bickering like schoolgirls politicians of Sindh or a middle east could happen on you too.

Congrats everybody. And well done IK.

Hahaha yeah the Doctors in Dabgary Garden are just a rip off and yes RMI is quite expensive but they do provide very good services for your money. I prefer going to KTH (Khyber Teaching Hospital) for anything beyond the control of a GP, as they have the best of expetise on anything serious and available 24/7. The ICU and CCU staff is very very professional, I wouldn't talk about the normal wards though as the housejob-students from KMC (Khyber Medical College) are in service most of the time but of course they medicate a patient with the professor's (Senior Doctor who teaches them) advice.

The only good the ANP Govt. did in their tenure is to allot the land to IK's hospital and to start off with they donated quite a bit of money too. Good going...

^^^ You are not poor my brother. The poor is the one who doesn't have any faith. The change is Inshallah on the corner, just keep tight your faith.

trust me brother, medical profession has now become a booming buissiness on patients' expenses. They rip them off without providing any kind of proper service. We saw teh nastiness of these people first hand when my mum was battleing with cancer, very horrible attitude, criminal type actions, all their eyes on your pocket and no regards for the patient and their suffering. This IK guy deserves a huge respect for doing such an excellent job.

I heard he wanted to start a Cancer Research centre in Karachi. well none the less he is the only person in the history of the world to have COLLECTED such Great Amounts of money purely on his personal Credibility. more over he is the only person in PAKistan to have done these projects without having a post. purely on his personal credibility. the GREAT KHAN Imran Khan !

Sorry brother to hear about your mother and I did lost my real uncle from Cancer too but that's how life is and death will one way or the other find a mean to haunt you down.

You are quite right about Doctors being very greedy and nasty lately. Even I can give you the testimony of the Doctors being cruel as half of my family belongs to this profession - and there blood has become white in greed. There's is saying goes in our place - ''Once a man was passing by a graveyard and he saw another person making dua (prayer) for dead's forgiveness, the passerby man asked him please don't ask Allah for everyone's forgiveness as there might be a Doctor buried here and we don't want Allah to forgive them.'' it tells how much the poor/middle class has been affected by their cruelty.
