New Delhi: A woman was strangulated to death after she refused marriage and her body burnt to conceal the crime, police said on Saturday, adding one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

On Saturday morning, police found a partially burnt body of a woman from a narrow street in Khirajabad Goan area of south Delhi, Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said.

The deceased was identified as Mithu Das, 26, from West Bengal and later on the day, the accused Sarat Das, 43, from the state, was arrested.
On his interrogation it was found that he had, on Friday night, strangulated Mithu to death after she refused to marry his brother-in-law, despite the duo being in a relationship, Baaniya said.

Mithu who worked as a domestic help, had gone to meet family of the accused on Friday. She had dinner with them but later an argument broke out between her and Das and in a fit of rage, he strangulated her, Baaniya said.

Later, Das wrapped the body in a bed sheet and dumped it on a desolated street. He then poured petrol over the body and set it ablaze to make it difficult for identification.

Baaniya said that CCTV footage helped them to nab the accused.

Well, women are oppressed in this part of the world.....from Satti to rape and being treated as objects and "paon ki jotti". If you read their mythologies and religious books, you will realise nothing is happening out of the blue...it is part and parcel of their culture and religion.

If you check their movies and novels everything..the woman is running after the man and does everything to please him whether it is seductive and degrading gyration (called dance) or falling to his feet and bowing before her lover and in-laws. So these values are deep.

Very regretful. It seems they have the perp and he gets a strong punishment for his actions.

@Joe Shearer I would be the first one to say that our area ( the south Asia) is backward land, confused and filled with extremely backward and self harming concepts along with a good amount of fanaticism in public. Thus we all must understand that these extremely regrettable incidents can and will happen.

The only thing that can dissuade and bring some semblance of control on such incidents is the rule of law and the swiftness of the courts to dispense justice. If only these two can be done right then no doubt justice will prevail which will lead to reduction of such incidents.

It doesn't matter what Indian mythologies or religion says. What matters is what does the law say and just like Pakistan law, Indian law also punishes such incidents severely. So when the provisions are available then why don't the perpetrators stop?
I believe it stems from lack of fear of the judicial and criminal system. Its the same here.
Its not that they think they will bribe their way it out, they are simply oblivious to it when they plan to commit these acts and the reason for such obliviousness is that they don't take into account the criminal justice system.

The criminal justice system is an institution meant to create fear amongst those that can or think to commit a crime by highlighting that your crime will bring our might against you and you won't last. This dissuades the would be criminal.

To create fear the institution must make severe examples, maintain continuous supply of show of might and of course make it self the center of attention.

I think both our criminal justice systems fail all three. They fail to make severe examples.
They fail to keep a continuous supply due to corruption and ineptness of the police and doubts raised in form 154 and challan 173.

And the only time they are mentioned in public is when they showcase weakness.

This is simply one issue amongst the thousand that create perpetrator.

I could not agree more.

There has been a degradation of the judicial system, progressively, steadily, since independence.
  1. There are insufficient courts to meet the needs of the state and of the people;
  2. The number of judges has not kept pace with the requirements of judges;
  3. The State Governments and the Government of India is a prime cause for congestion of the courts; it is the habit of these bodies to go on appeal at every stage, using every excuse, sometimes to the ridiculous level of reaching the Supreme Court on the same matter;
  4. Banks are another source of congestion. They have passed the buck; their duty to examine a proposal for borrowing is met at a certain level, thereafter the hunger for unearned money takes over, unsound loans are granted, repayment becomes impossible and the bank loses its money. It then goes to court.
  5. Lawyers have their own role to play. As they get paid every time they appear, enough though it is one-tenth of the sum payable for both appearing and arguing, it pays them better to keep ten cases in line, to appear in nine cases and claim the bare fees for appearing and seeking an adjournment, and to claim the proper fees for standing and arguing a case for one case. If you work out the arithmetic, they have a huge penalty to pay in earnings if they argue each case through without seeking adjournments.
On top of that are several sociological factors. Studies (Bernard Cohn being the most well-known exponent of this view) have shown that justice in the villages is not adjudicated, in court, following the British plan, but out of court, through the influence of the local Thakur (or local social group that is dominant).

I could go on and on.

Not really. I don't watch such a degraded torturous media but I get to know from the friends who some how get subjected to this torture and advise me abstain from the shit.
It seems too many pakistanis love to get subjected to this torture . We know you inside out .

I have many friends even my accountant is Hindu from Delhi and his wife touches his feet and do all the things what i saw in Bollywood movie, even he told me during his stay in his village his wife not allowed to sleep on same bed but she must sleep nearby on mat.

Women of India should be freed from this evil practice of sati.

Sir, which century are you living in? I was incredulous when I read your comment, and read it several times over just to make sure that I did not have to make an urgent visit to the optometrist.
