With India at helm, UNSC to push for Libya, Syria peace

After getting the presidency at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after a gap of 19 years, India has decided not to spare any efforts to re-establish its credentials and continue in hot pursuit of being a permanent member of the world body.

Close on the heels of it demanding an end to the use of force by the Syrian authorities, India will soon push for a ceasefire in Libya. It also wants to bring new ideas to the table on the issue of UN peace-keeping.

On Wednesday, the UN Security Council under India's presidency called on Syrian authorities to cease the use of force, saying an inclusive and Syrian-led political process is the only solution to the crisis.

The council chaired by Hardeep Puri, India's permanent representative to the UN, said in its presidential statement on Wednesday that the world body should aim at “effectively addressing the legitimate aspirations and concerns of the population which will allow the full exercise of fundamental freedoms for its entire population, including that of expression and peaceful assembly.”

“The security council expresses its grave concern at the deteriorating situation in Syria, and expresses profound regret at the death of many hundreds of people. The council condemns the widespread violations of human rights and the use of force against civilians by the Syrian authorities,” the statement said.

At least 120 individuals have reportedly been killed in the city of Hama since Friday as Syrian security forces used tanks, mortar shells and heavy machine guns against civilian demonstrators.

Going against what the West thinks on the issue, India will soon push for a ceasefire in Libya.

“I am particularly worried, if I may say so, about the situation in Libya. With the month of Ramadan, the month of prayer and fasting starting on the August 1, we would be happy if there could cessation of hostilities for the month of Ramadan in Libya,” Puri had said earlier this week.

The council, of which India is holding the rotating Presidency this month, said the Syrian authorities should respect human rights and comply with their obligations under applicable international law.

“Those responsible for the violence should be held accountable,” it said.

This Libyan attack should stop ASAP..NATO again mis-calculated the opposition to Qaddafi.. Majority are happy with him and Libya is probably the best country in the region..

Not entirely sure about that. But proactive engagement in a country's internal affairs is never a good idea. Lets hope India can actually take a stand against NATO and enforce a UN regulated cease fire. I'm sure China,Russia,Germany and Brazil would support it.

Underestimated its opponent whilst overestimating their economies to stomach the war. The Italians have already pulled out forcing the Brits to send in more fighters meanwhile the French carrier was pulled back for (supposedly) maintenance.

They underestimated the support Qaddafi has in his country..The rebels are just looting NATO's money..
Will be interesting to see how long NATO continues its attack..

Gaddafi's support is simply too strong in Libya. No matter how the media tries to portray the rebel in their masses and showing them in the good lights, they are simply no match for the trained and armed men under Gaddafi. The air campaign, training, donation of weapons and ammunitions proved too costly for NATO. The economy of certain NATO countries are too unstable to fight on leaving Britain, France and the U.S. to primarily shoulder the burden.

The war does seem to be the difference between perceptions and ground realities with some strategic goals thrown in, some heady mix!!!

The rebel commander was assassinated by an Islamic faction inside the rebels. This shows that the rebels are united for the sake of opposing Gaddafi. At the end if Gaddafi is toppled there is a high chance of rebels turning their guns on eachother , converting Libya to another Afghanisthan.

"I tell the coward crusaders. I live in a place where you can't get to me. I live in the hearts of millions."

Whether Gaddafi was a good leader or a tyrant is debatable. But even if we buy the argument of NATO that he was a tyrant and the civilians wanted a change, an armed intrusion was the worst way to do it.
A nation has been destroyed, a generation scarred and the repercussions are going to last well after the conflict is over.

Well its a case of 'Catch-22' situation. If NATO did not help the Libyan rebels, there would have been very high chance that they could be massacred in Bengazi. Unlike the Army of Egypt which commands high respect among the local population, Libyan Army is highly factionlized. Troops loyal to Gaddafi (made up of his tribemen) would'nt have hesitated a moment before opening fire on rebels and if that happened whole world would have blamed international organizations especially NATO for their insensitivity. Now when the NATO is helping the rebels, there are voices opposing their involvement in a sovereign nation.(One should also remember that this voices were conspicuously absent when NATO interfered in Serbia twice to save a group of people of certain religious orientation)

I think NATO also miscalculated Gaddafi's indifference to civilian causality and destruction of his country. He seems ready to sacrifice the whole country and its people so that he can hold on to power. He is no mood to giveup like Mubarak or Ben Ali.

That's true. But in every conflict there is a measure up done prior to the attack of the allied casualities if an attack takes place, vs if it didn't. In this instance, the NATO seem to have miscalculated by a huge margin.
And did they actually expect him to roll over?? This was a country which willingly gave up it's WMD's. It would not have done so without retaining a huge defensive capability by means of conventional weapons. Besides, there were countries worse off that Libya. The worst part at present is that Gaddafi wants a ceasefire while NATO insists he leave. That's pure blackmail. The poor civilians are suffering.
