So I have previously installed a pirated windows on my laptop and it's working okay, no real problem with it.

But now since Windows have announced that they'll be giving free Windows 10 to all the genuine windows users, I want to get my factory installed windows back.

The laptop came with an original Windows 7 Home premium, the key is printed on the back.

Now I want to restore to the original windows. I have searched the internet, but couldnt get any real solid instructions which give one bang on the buck method. There was one on a Microsoft website which said I should download a windows from Microsoft site, then install that windows and put in the key that was on the back of the laptop.

Does this method work?

And does anyone have another way of doing this?

@Jazzbot and any other techno geeks...

Windows 7 to Windows 10? I would wait for at least 3 to 6 months, after launch before jumping on the Win10 bandwagon.

Secondly, make sure you backup your data + drivers.

Thirdly, If you have a genuine key, then what you have mentioned should work.

This should work just fine.

There is no other way of doing this. The keys are independent from the copy of windows you have. Just download Win 7 and apply the key you have. If the key is valid it should make your windows genuine.

So I just download windows from MS site, put in the key on the back of my laptop and voila?

It will have all the drivers and everything or do i need to back up that stuff as well?

I got a notification to upgrade to W-10. I had to reserve my copy.

Yeah that's what I want!

Yes, have internet connected. Windows 7 automatically downloads drivers for you. If you still want to be at safe end, you can backup the drivers.

PEOPLE !

the "free" is just a 1 year trial, pending which, you'll have to fork out for the "license"

it could be buggy as hell too, why are some people eager to sign up for a guinea pig thing, unless you want to beta test it for them. o_O

@Jango

you going from a pirated win8 to your original OEM supplied win7 ?

Are you sure?

From what I have heard and understood, it is permanent.

Pirated Windows 7 to OEM Win 7

It should work just fine...

If you still have the recovery partition available may be you could just restore your windows to factory settings but I highly doubt you would have that now. In worst case scenario you will be installing pirated windows again but don't worry it should be working fine

My understanding is,

You are eligible to upgrade to Windows 10 for 1 year. So if you upgrade within the period of eligibility, you get full version of windows 10 for free. If you missed the slot you will be forced to payment method for downloading Windows 10 in future. If my understand is correct, you are confusing between the eligibility period of 1 year with rolling back subscription package

So you mean that even if I download it from the MS website and put in my oiginal windows key, it would be fake?

Painfully beta test - I think is the word!
yup, kisi bhi cheez pe free likh do, log toot parte hain :P

haven't checked for myself but I was talking to a friend who's in the industry and he said so.

but even if it is, which I doubt.. I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

I guess its ok if you're a casual user and just using it for browsing the net and regular email, skype etc usage but if not recommended yet if you use it as a workstation for specific heavy tasks like 3d animation, or even gaming, or any other kind of 'workstation' stuff, video, photo, music, architecture/design or whatever

back up everything of value on the disk (partition) where windows is installed (usually the c: drive) and do a fresh format, install of a legit win 7 and go for the win 10 upgrade from windows update.

ok, could be.. still not worth the risk if everything is fine for now, I'm not going anywhere from my win 7x64 for the foreseeable future.

nops I said Genuine windows will be installed from the Microsoft website

I tested Windows 10 on my laptop couple of days ago, it was quite buggy but there were definitely interesting features to try out. I have a touch screen laptop so was able to utilise the maximum out of it. Won't recommend testing it for now but if you or any PDF member wish to have the glimpse of it, they don't have to wait for 2 months as you can the install the preview from Microsoft's Insider program.

Home page - Windows Insider Program

The best feature was, after it got really messed up, it gave me an option to revert back to old operating system without the loss of single document. So thankfully got everything back in same condition upon revert.
