WION New Delhi, Delhi, India Feb 04, 2019, 11.56 AM (IST)

In a rare interview with WION's diplomatic correspondent, Sidhant Sibal, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid talked about the future of Afghanistan as well Hindus and Sikhs if they come back to power. He added that he wants a cordial relationship with all neighbouring countries and added, "I'll protect Chabahar as it's positive for Afghanistan''. Edited excerpts

WION: Do you think American forces will leave Afghanistan and when is your next meeting with the US?

Zabihullah Mujahid: From the initial agreement we have reached with the United States, they seem to have shown readiness to leave Afghanistan and put an end to their occupation. A meeting to complete will be held on February 25, 2019.

WION: What kind of role Pakistan is playing in your talks with the US?

Zabihullah Mujahid: Our talks with the United States are between us and the Americans, no one else is involved in it.

WION: How do you see India's role in Afghanistan? India is helping in developing a lot of infrastructure projects.

Zabihullah Mujahid: Afghanistan wants good relations with all its neighbouring and regional countries including India. As the representatives of the people of Afghanistan, we want to see healthy and positive role of all countries in Afghanistan based on the needs of the people of our homeland.

WION: How do you see Chabahar port and future of the port?

Zabihullah Mujahid: We value all economic projects and are committed to supporting and protecting all projects such as Chabahar port that are fruitful and positive for the prosperity and development of our country.

WION: If you come back to power how do you see the situation of Afghan Hindus and Sikhs?

Zabihullah Mujahid: Afghan Hindus and Sikhs are our countrymen. Just as all Afghans have rights in this country, our Hindu and Sikh countrymen will have their own rights that shall be guaranteed.

You guys are falling for the same trick over and over again ...... have you verified if this is an authentic news? Probably not.

Salaam

This seems logical for the Afghans. They will have a long road before them after the American withdrawal. once they are able to gain full control of Afghanistan, it will take a long time to undo the damage of a war that has lasted nearly fourty years.

I doubt they try to start any foreign conflicts any time soon. I, however, do think that they stop before they purged the country of any elements they deem hostile.

For Pakistan the hope is that once they come to power they will not let the Indians use their territory against Pakistan. This will allow Pakistan to free up resources tied up on the Afgan border somewhat and focus on other threats.

As for India and Afghanistan, since they don't share a border, I don't think too much happening that could concern Pakistan.

Whether the Taliban will care too much about the Indian long time support of the Northern Alliance before and especially during the American occupation is yet to be seen.

What lessons the Taliban learned during the long war and what they didn't will ultimately show once they come to power. Before that, it's just going to be guesswork on part of others. I doubt the Taliban will reveal too much before then.

I doubt that we will see too many major changes from last time too quickly though.

WION actually suggests on behalf of the Indian establishment that time has come where Ashraf Ghani is surely retiring from his job. Cannot trust the source (WIOM) unless it is reported directly from the Taliban but then again, no ruling party will ever deny to have relations with other countries however, the nature & level of cooperation depends upon policies of party in power. On a side note: Chabahar is in Iran so here, WION might be linking Taliban presence in Chabahar, which is not good for Iran in these stages as Taliban is not Government.
