Why women in Saudi Arabia have a long way to go yet

Travel overseas you mean? On her own, without a maHram? Travel's hard as it is, why add to it?

Marriage is another issue, let's not bundle it within the same post. That said, we in pakistan generally follow fiqh ul Hanafii, which does not obligate a waalii...well if the bride and her father differ, the state steps in as the waalii in lieu of the father in the bride's favour...some technical stuff I don't really know about and can't enlighten you more about.

No marriage can be finished without the Bride's consent Something everyone imagines in their head and then write about it as if it was a fact. Fiqh Hanbali says all sides of the marriage must be okay with it.

At school, we were taught that marriage can be terminated only if man wants it to, woman can get divorce in special circumstances, not always. If a man says Talaq 3 times, then divorce happens even if the woman is not happy about it, it can also happens even if the man is drunk. At least this is according to Hanafi Figh.

What are you doing to women in Afghanistan?

Giving women right of vote is not every thing.... important is they shall be free to vote.. in Afghanistan not even men are free to vote!!!
Mr. BATMAN, why are you so angry again, chill out. What part of my post was unpleasant to you that you reacted that angrily?

As per Afghanistan, everybody can vote, men and women alike, and also, women can be candidate in all levels including presidential candidate, there is no restrictions for it. We people have a very very long way to go, maybe many many centuries to reach somewhere, so no easy fix for afghanistan, but we are better than what we were a decade ago. And i do agree wiht the friend from SA, you cant bring change to that country over night, you have to wait, work hard until people's minds are ready, otherwise, rush solutions will backfire.

How far is bharat from true progress?

Brother they have truly arrived. I think Bombay Dude is a specialist in this subject and may be one. Its incredible advancement for India where Bombay Dude is a shining beacon of hope in India...

Most of the report you said is wrong. while some is yes true but it is clearly over exaggerated.

Things don't happen over night. The Shoura is a powerful body in Saudi Arabia and its reputation of being useless is usually carried over from the last king era.

Having women in the Shoura means that most of these problems will change not just driving. If King Abdullah gave them the right to drive and that's it the entire world will be yey now saudi is cool and move on but what he did was give Women a say in changing the government's rules and laws. The next Shoura council cycle will be in one year and 4 months. After one year and 4 months people would have loosened up significantly till then.

Besides in a month or so the Shoura will hold the women driving issue to study it comprehensively (In other word they will be allowing it) before even the next Shoura cycle. I am 100% sure that they will come up with the ruling of establishing the infra structure for women driving meaning female driving schools etc.

BBC News - Saudi woman to be lashed for defying driving ban

and their again perhaps driving may be 1 step too far.........

The Day Lesbians can Walk Freely That Day Saudi Arabia could said to be Truly Progressed! :P

It's not a society that will get the idea - bakri and camels are not safe let alone lesbians -- either way, the new understanding articulated by the Wabahi prince is definitely a step forward -- nevertheless, lets remember that arabia is not a Republic, yet, and society has a long way to go before it can shed it's prudish and misogynist ideas --- Can this really be done in a Wahabi society? Well, it depends on the people and the conscience that intellectuals help to create.

If in response to the LIBERALIZATION of arabian society, the intellectuals argue that Islam itself is being threatened and challenged, then it is fair to say that this stuff about awareness of misogyny and determination to end it, is just a pie in the sky idea, because a whole host of other ideas will have to be struck down first, these include the notion of the "Wali".

i dont see any problem if he is shia.

I dont understand the sensitivity people have over whether they are shia, wahabi or sunni. I think Muslim first everything else second. I'm not here to offend a sect or group. I'm here to voice my opinion and i feel if this prince and the Saudi government want me to stand and clap this decision then they will be mistaken. By being the fulcrum and central country for Muslims does not entitle them to have laws and rules that are flawed.
