Why only 18 holes drilled till now?

I don't know if the Russians or Chinese have this capability, but it is not a bad idea.

ExxonMobil wasn't crazy when they approached Pakistan to drill in the given areas. Obviously they had done their homework. They have been exploring these areas for a considerable time .

Exploiting shale oil and gas is far cheaper than off shore drilling. There has been no significant attempts at doing this in Pakistan. This is where GOP should focus on.

Seismic surveys are starting point .
Yes I know but the question is that if results come positive in survey that means oil is there or not?

It mean oil found or not?
Drilling is about telling it can be extracted or not?

This info in regards to offshore not on shore.

Seismic surveys only indicate likely geological formations where oil and gas gets trapped. Usually domed formations with differing rock strata.
These formations can only indicate where oil/gas over time COULD collect. Seismic data can NEVER indicate the presence of oil or gas

How come they locate formation and not presence?
If the sound waves can detect rock formations then they can also detect oil. They cannot detect oil is strange.

Actually, I will be the devil's advocate and ask a controversial question. How can we tell that ENI and Exxon are telling the truth? Which leads us to the underlying problem. It is a shame that a nuclear power is unable to explore its own land for mineral resources because it lacks the technology. Shouldn't we pay attention to the underlying problem?

Seriously....Why should we put our trust on Western companies?

I think we should invite Chinese and Russians as well.

We are not on west side in this geopolitics game....They will never tell us about our resources even if we have it..

Well I think they might be in for a percentage if they strike oil... not sure. There is also the professional aspect of it. Imagine if such a company was lying and a competitor with a nearby dig exposed that? They'd be out of business.

Your point remains though, we lack expertise in many fields. It's a shame.

I raised suspicions over involvement of Exxon earlier and somebody replied saying it needs shale drilling technology which only America has in the whole world. My point is that a nuclear power should be able to develop the technology by investing into R&D. And if we can't, then that's a shame and we should focus on this weakness.

The G Block is a big area. Nothing happens to their reputation if someone else finds it in another block.

As to why they might hide the truth, remember Exxon is known for shaking up entire countries. It got the exclusive rights on that area thus stopping competition, and could be waiting for the right time. It might be systematically mapping areas around the globe and as other wells dry up, it could then set plans into motion. Those plans could span 30-40 years such that our children would deal with the consequences. And if you think this is silly, let me tell you what Australia is doing in Papua New Guinea. They tried buying land there but 20 claimants come up on one piece of land. So they have started making a list of their claims and they will verify them over generations to see if they change. They estimate the entire process may take 100 years. Read that again: ONE HUNDRED YEARS. But they are happy to wait.

There is another point to note. The lab tests check for oil, but what about other minerals such as those containing rare earth metals? If we cannot access samples taken from our own land and test them in our own labs, then we are at the mercy of others.
