why is laundering is so prosperous in India?

only if you have a maid. otherwise, i get it washed by kilos from laundries who take them by kilos, they use machines.

It is because of the low cost of manpower and subsequently laundering.Most Indian families can't put in the one time time cost of acquiring a washing machine due to their lower ability to make bigger purchases.
 
washing by ppl is cheaper than electricity used by washing machine?

Washer men like cobblers & barbers are a community and an industry.

This is how it has been for centuries, even now such ' washing points' called Dhobi Ghats exist . Despite the huge textile mills the village weaver still exists, this is quite like that.

This is reducing gradually but as a source of livelihood it does exist , the turn around of clothes washed in this manner is longer but is not a concern for those who engage them.
