Why do Elderly Chinese folks collect Garbage

Hi,just wanna ask a question to Chinese members here I live in NYC specifically Queens,NY growing up always lived close to areas where East Asians like Chinese and Koreans are living tho the neighborhood I lived mostly was Russian Jews mostly anyways lately we been getting an influx of Chinese folks in the area I live since the past decade and I notice elderly Chinese both men and women collecting trash usually happens in the afternoon or on garbage pick up days like Tuesdays and Fridays whats the reasoning for it yeah I know you could make a quick buck not really much is it more of outing for them just wondering is this common in Mainland China,Taiwan, HK or just in the Chinese diaspora

I see some do in Beijing, they usually go for cans and plastic bottles, I heard one bottle is worth 10 cents.

i would assume they are recent immigrants without much money. they are trying to supplement their income with a little bit of recycling $$$

I did that fresh after graduation. I made $5 per month on recycled stuff

Same here in Amsterdam. East european migrants and some moroccans search thru garbage to collect whatever is useable.

Look at this with a positive angle. They are doing the recycling of materials which would otherwise pollute our environment. While earning a little money, they are helping reducing plastic and metal pollution that will hurt the future generations.

I am doing recycling too, but with no return of money. We collect any thing that can be recycle and sell them, and give all money to charity like Tzu Chi foundation.
