Who are the customers for rip-off products?

We used to have lots of fake products in India. Their only market was rural areas where most of the people were illiterates and used to identify the product with the color and design/model. That used to work in those days. I am talking about 20 years back. I doubt if there are any such products floating around in the rural market in India nowadays. But my point is, these fake products mainly target the people who can not read the labels. China's literacy rate is much better now. Who are the real target customers for these products? Even if we believe that the popular brands are not able to satisfy the demand, but then how those customers can buy rip-off products? if they are looking for popular brands, that means they are looking for quality and brand image. How the same people can prefer ripped off products? that makes no sense to me..

If there is such a huge market of unsatisfied customers, why can't these companies make new quality products to cater those markets? What is the point in buying SQNY instead of real Sony? What is the point in buying PUNK instead of PUMA? What is the logic behind all this?

Are they buying not knowing they are rip-offs OR are they buying knowing that they are rip-off but still quality products OR is it written in original name in Chinese but rip-off name in English? :what:

i always buy branded products...no matter foreign brands or indian brands....branded products are best....

when we do not have enough money we go for cheaper products...but why would you go for rip-off products? isn't it look cheap on us? :what:

Well. You want a portable DVD player because you are going to be setting in a car for 12 hours going and a 12 hours coming trip cross country and you only need it for that time and you don't have enough money. What do you do??

I buy a SQNY DVD player for 150 Riyals which comes with a USB port and a car charger or buy a 600 Riyals one which doesn't even have a US port?? You get what i am trying to say?

you mean only cheaper alternatives are rip-off products??
i would rather buy a cheaper but branded product than a rip-off

I know so many f*i*l*t*h*y* rich friends here who always ask me to get them some fake stuffs from China (handbags, fountain pen), when I have to do a business travel there. Well, I'm not stupid and don't want to get caught at the custom.

Because branded products are expensive in europe.
In India at least we have good local brands, which are not too expensive.

Looks like rip-offs are the least preferred products for many...but this seems to be a huge business..so who are the target customers!!!! illiterates???
