Sometimes a crisis is needed to judge the efficacy of a country’s regional policies. The US-Iran confrontation is one such moment for Delhi.

In retrospect, the India-US meeting of foreign and defence ministers in the 2+2 format in Washington on December 18 stands out as an embarrassment. Exactly a fortnight after that event, President Donald Trump ordered the assassination of someone Delhi regards as “a senior Iranian leader”.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Tehran on December 22, soon after the 2+2 event to co-chair the joint commission meeting and hold wide-ranging discussions with the Iranian leadership. Before travelling to Tehran, Jaishankar had taken permission from Washington to kickstart the Chabahar Port project so that he could convey the happy news to the Iranian leaders.

Jaishankar himself stated while in Tehran that he had a “very good conversation on the regional and global picture. India and Iran will work together closely on their shared interests.”

However, the murder of the “senior Iranian leader” in cold blood took place exactly 10 days after Jaishankar’s Tehran visit and the Trump administration didn’t take our minister into confidence on what it was up to in India’s “extended neighbourhood.”

As tensions with Iran cascaded, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo frantically called important world capitals that matter to America’s regional policies in the Persian Gulf region, soliciting support or understanding.

Pompeo even reached out to Pakistani army chief Gen. Qamar Bajwa. But Jaishankar was ignored, someone who is peerless in the international diplomatic circuit today as one of America’s closest and most trusted friends of yesteryears.

Are these Indians stupid and delusional? The Americans are treating them like a poodle and Iran is treating them like a piggy bank. 10 days after Chabahar is exempted, Trump killed Soleiman, before that Chinese and Russian flotilla went for an exercise there.

Noticed whenever huge seismic changes take place, India is always ignored by the US.

Just remember when years ago US decided to change their tune on Afghanistan Taliban peace process, it was started via Pakistan and India left in the dark.

Nothing ever comes of it. We can't expect them to be working for Indian interests all the time. They have their own interests.

India is a supapowa wannabe, Iran only consulted Russia and China. Come on, they don't Indian pumping in cash and building stuff, but in times of war, those ports will be taken over and Chinese or Russian fleet will dock there. They even need to buy ZPMC for god's sake.

apparently india is trying to get kep one leg in chabar port. the visit by jaishankar was without doubt about that. ultimately its up to iran if they want to play games at this stage of the crisis.

Once India bended over to US and stopped purchasing oil, Chabahar is dead, Iran was very clear, Chabahar was a commerce port not military. They wanted China in too, but with Gwadar and our traditional ties to Pakistan, it is a no no.

isn't China going to develop chabahar port and it will act in auxiliary to gwadar? or am I getting it mixed up! for india that port is all that stands between it and its designs which we know what they are.

It was offered to China but we did not reciprocate le since Gwadar is ongoing. Furthermore due to sanctions it's commercially dead, no MNC will use it to export goods, only India will use it to supply terrorists in Afg.

Because we are not a player in that conflict ridden midde east region...India has absolutely no role to play in that disturbed area called as Afganistan or middle east crisis...

Actually we will be happy if US ignore in this situation as long as our trade relationship and US support on our core issues like Kashmir...

We got caught in cross winds is what happened.

There are concerted efforts by both sides to further the project, but given the current geopolitical scenario, I wouldn't hold my breath over it.

May I remind the OP that despite his assertions about the US treating India as a "poodle" that the US rarely ever thinks beyond it's own strategic aims. The current global power and economic structure limits our response options to some degree. I'd be the first one to applaud if the GoI goes ahead without giving any heed to the consequences in the direction of our own interests, but pragmatically we are hindered by multivariate interests.

The current Chinese Government is no doubt in a strong economic and political position that allows it much greater flexibility, but if you were to research the GoC responses to difficult situations during 1990-2010 period, you'd find them to be pragmatic but ultimately limited. It depends on your current national strength.

Pride does not feed an empty stomach. I'd much rather we follow Sir Deng Xiaoping's policy of keeping our heads down and work towards building a strong state first before jumping into the global arena.

I would say you are one smart Indian.... The Chinese had always been bide your time. It's part of our strategic culture, even the current trade war did not much damage, ultimately US went back to our original offer, which was to buy more farm produce etc, could have solved it without all the damage, but Trump being Trump just had to be a dick.

Lol Pakistani delusions are funny. Chabahar is still very much alive, the US actually granted India a waiver that still holds today. in fact, the amount of goods coming into and out of Chabahar has actually increased over %100.

Why do you need US to grant you a waiver? Aren't you a supapowa? Read that article, right after the so called 'written' approval, Trump droned someone, commonsense, they tell you waht you want to listen and being a simplistic gullible delusional bunch, you believed it. The same shit will happrn to your s400z. Remember the exemption? Hahahah
