We don’t want to embarrass India by asking about NRC: Obaidul

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said they did not want to embarrass the Indian authorities by asking them again and again about their National Register of Citizens.
They continue to assure Bangladesh government that nothing would happen for being alarmed over the NRC, Obaidul said at a press conference held at his office.
After a meeting with Indian high commissioner in Dhaka Riva Ganguly Das at his office on the day, Obaidul said, ‘As the Indian prime minister assured us over the NRC, I did not embarrass her by asking the question.’
Obaidul said there was no discussion with the high commissioner on push-in issue on the day.
Some 19.7 lakh people were excluded from the final list as National Register of Citizens in Assam State of India published on August 31.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan at his office on Tuesday said none but Bangladeshi citizens would be allowed to enter the country from India. He said there was no reason to be panicked over the news that people were being pushed into Bangladesh from India.
‘We aren’t sure whether those trying to come are Bangladeshis. Although they’re trying to enter, members of Border Guard Bangladesh didn’t let them enter,’ Asaduzzaman said adding that the intruders were only a few hundred in number.
On Wednesday, at the press briefing, Obaidul said the Indian high commissioner, however, said there was anti-Indian propaganda when prime minister Sheikh Hasina went to India.
He said the high commission was of the opinion that such propaganda was increasing and also wanted to know the reasons behind it.
Obaidul said the high commission questioned why Memorandum of Understanding was being mentioned as ‘contract’ by some quarters when MoU was an open secret.
He said bilateral relationship between the two countries was good and it was on an excellent track.
‘In cases of any problem, we can solve the problem through discussion,’ he said, ‘Currently, there are no warps in this relationship.’
The minister said the Indian high commissioner mainly met him to request speeding up works of some six to seven joint-venture at Mainamati, Sarail, Khagrachari and Feni areas.
Some of these were under the Indian Line of Credit, he said.
