Visiting Bangla Desh

Hello Forum Member.

Visiting BD these days. Staying at the Radisson. very nice and expensive!!!. some one told me that the hotel is either run by the BD Armed Forces or they have a 'share' in the hotel.

more to come....

1.The old Fauji Foundation has been converted to the Sena Kalyan Sangstha (SKS) with the same funds and objectives. There is also the Army Welfare Trust (AWT). These organizations now own a bank, Radisson Htl, properties, industries, etc. Recently AWT even took charter of two BSC ships which they now run. More hotels are planned in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. As with Fauji Foundation the profits are spent on education of children of ex-servicemen and welfare.

2.However, Fauji Foundation has done a wonderful thing by establishing hospitals all around. This is something we need to emulate because non-officers are not authorized CMH facilities.

3. Hotels in BD. Same in India except that in the South it is v cheap.

@ What do mean by this statement ??? You are talking like the "TV Talk Show" of Mumtasir Mamun.

@ All the areas in an around Tajgaon and Kormitula airport were acquired during the British period in 1942 once Second War was going on. These two airports were made by the American/British during that times in order to facilitates shipments of military armament to Chinese General Chiankaishek. These airports were also used to help for the Burma Campaign. During those days there were no military garrison in these areas. Military was stationed at old High Court building, Dacca Medical College was used as CMH rather made for the military/war injured. War injury was so great in number that they extend it to Salimulla Hall.

@ Once Pakistan was created, the 16 Division HQ was shifted to present Dhaka Cantonment since than all the properties own by the then British Royel Airforce automatically came to BAF and Bangladesh Armed Forces.

It was the 14th Div. Ayub Khan as a Brig was the first GOC. His promotion to Maj Gen was pursued by CM Khwaja Nazimuddin who later became GG and PM.The Flag Staff House then was where the Caretaker Chief stays nowadays. It's last regular occupant Mansur Ali was PM and Home Minister when he was killed in that house.

1. In Dhaka, a Pakistani must visit the Ahsan Manjil, the old Nawab's palace. Preserved in the museum is the room where the convening meeting for All India Muslim League was held,1905. The sitting plan, the table and chairs have all been preserved and are on display. There is a wall-to-wall painting of the meeting.

2, Again, for a Pakistani it will be interesting to visit the Liberation War Museum to see our side of the story. The National Museum at Shahbagh is also interesting. The Shaheed Minar is important in our cultural life. The Victory Memorial at Savar and the National Assembly Building are magnificent.

3. However, the real beauty of BD lies outside the choked-up city. Drive out to Bogra and back is possible in a day. You will pass through the fantastic Jamuna bridge we have built over this powerful river. Or stay overnight in North Bengal. Visit the Sundarbans in the SE. Sylhet has lovely tea gardens. Cox's Bazar has the longest sea beach in the world. Your local friend could also take you to Chittagong Hill Tracts.

4. Everywhere there are roads. But traffic jam is perennial. In our terrain and climate it is difficult to maintain the roads. So surprises may await you somewhere. Air and rail connections are good. And going SE one should take a launch/steamer.

Wow! You must be loaded. :D

Welcome to your former country. Is it the first time? I hope you find some time to go around the country, interact with common man, how they feel about Pakistanis these days. Please share your experience with us:tup:

Ahsan Manjil
Dhakeswari temple
Armenian church
Lalbagh Fort
1857 memorial
Curzon hall
Sonargaon (29 km from dhaka. Very charming city, the buildings can bring back to the old days :) I urge you to visit this place)

I was thinking about beautiful and enjoyable places in Dhaka, not historical places.

I think those are not interesting place to the foreigners. I will never recommend those places to any foreigner from any country. We love those areas, even old town, cos we live here.

However, CHT areas and cox's bazar, st. martin, sundarban, sylhet and sunamjone are attractive to the foreigners. And some places and village outside Dhaka are beautiful to me like Jummuna Bridge and Jummuna resorts.

How can one travel to dhaka from calcutta by road/Bus.. what all docs are needed .I hold an indian passport. Can someone help ??

For a first time traveller you probably should take train. Rails station in Hawra could help you where to buy the ticket from. But before that you probably need to get the visa from BD high comisssion in Hawra. I dont think much paper needed except your current status in India (like job place or trade license if you are a businessman). That is what required by Indian high comission in BD for BD citizen. I am assuming BD high commission in India reciprocate the same.

Dont get train if you don't want to wait at checkpost for 8 hours, avail the bus service, it's far comfortable. Bus launches from Karunamoyi.

Those places are rare bro. Its quite true that natural beauty of bd can attract foreigners however, dhaka does not have much unique to offer to other south asian tourist( the cities are like quite similar)

watch out, traffic Jam ahead!

yes indeed - the office is only 3km away but it took 35mins and the driver told me it was a good day!. they r building a elevated road along the main blvd. is this project also handled by BD army as i saw army JCOs supervising the construction. one collegue of mine actually walks to work and gets there before the office vans!

that was the first place i visited. i must admit it was a very emotional time. someone asked me who i was. i informed him of my background. we didnt speak for a few minutes, then he shook my hand and offered to show me around. i only had 45 minutes as my flight was on the same day.

i met a couple of officers at the Raddisson. young guys very smart i must admit. we talked about the future mostly. the people in general were very friendly and soft-spoken. i felt welcome every where i went.
