HANOI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will run 88 solar power plants with a total capacity of 4,000 megawatts (MW) by the end of next month, according to the Vietnam Power Group (EVN), the country's biggest electricity producer and sole distributor.

As of May 17, a total of 27 solar power plants had started commercial operation, compared to only four plants one month ago, and 61 projects slated for completion in the next few weeks will have combined capacity of 2,000 MW, daily newspaper Vietnam News quoted the EVN as saying.

The Vietnamese government is striving to increase the total output of electricity produced from renewable sources from approximately 58 billion kWh in 2015 to 101 billion kWh by 2020, and 186 billion kWh by 2030.

Renewable energy projects are located mainly in the southern and south-central regions, helping reduce the pressure of supplying electricity to the southern region, the country's economic hub.

According to EVN, hydropower and coal-fired power are leading among electricity generation sources. To meet the growing demand for electricity, Vietnam needs to increase its total capacity from 47,900 MW by the end of September 2018 to 60,000 MW by 2020, to 96,500 MW by 2025, and to 129,500 MW by 2030.

From 0 to 4GW in 2 years. By the pace of solar capacity increase we can stop all coal imports and will go green in 10 years.

No further coal imports from Indonesia and Australia.

Sorry @Indos

Really inspirational! I wish our leaders would take green energy more seriously. Instead they are busy with coal and oil.
Feel free to ask Vietnam for solar power plants. Solar plants are cheaper than thought and they pay off in the long run.

I am actually happy to hear that, I hope Vietnam can reach its target as soon as possible. In Indonesia we also try to use cleaner energy to replace coal burn power plan. Does the solar cell are all made in Vietnam or you import it from another country ?

Đắk Lắk to build more solar power plants

Southeast Asian developer German ASEAN Power (GA Power) to build two Solar Power Plants in Ha Tinh Province, Vietnam, totaling up to 58 MW

Both ground-mounted solar power plant projects – one 29 MW in Cam Hung commune and another 29 MW in Son Quang commune – received approval by the Vietnamese Ministry for Industry & Trade for the inclusion into the national master plan.

The development focus by GA Power for both solar power plant projects has been to ensure long-term and low risk operation. The project sites were chosen based on their proximity to the grid connection points, the power evacuation capacity and the local and regional long-term power demand situation. With the land use rights provided for 50 years the technical and commercial extension of the power plant life cycle beyond the 20-year FiT tenure has also been a development objective.

As an international and independent solar developer, the exceptional support by the Provincial People’s Committee of Ha Tinh Province, EVN and all other relevant local institutions have made important contributions to the successful approval of the projects on provincial and national level. GA Power’s projects in Ha Tinh are 100% held by the German-owned solar company. Throughout the project development process GA Power has been and will be supported by GVIP (German Vietnamese Industrial Park). The projects where presented to Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc by the Provincial People’s Committee at his most recent visit to Ha Tinh.

GA Power is now in the process of evaluating project partners and suppliers for the financial and technical implementation of the projects by June 2019.

Unfortunately we still import most solar cells from China, $740m in Q1 this year (Vietnam is #1 export market for China). But that is going to change. The goal is replacing all imports by making the stuffs by domestic or foreign factories.
