The article did not specify how this was calculated. They rank Switzerland as number 1, but what have the Swiss created in recent memory? UK as number two is also not accurate.

If this was a more scientific, I would bet US would be number one.
 
Perhaps per capita innovative index.

If US is not number 1, I think the rank is useless. Innovative should be calculate as an absolute term per country.
 
China has moved up from #35 (2013) to #29 (2014)
