Vietnam naval ships starts visiting three Southeast Asian countries

I didn't hear anything myself.

It is reported in media that the contract has been signed. This is one of 10 biggest contract to upgrading our navy capacity in 2013. But it is not approved by related authority.

2200 tonnes? well, that's interesting. Because wikipedia said it is 1500 and our Sigma Class has similar tonnages. That's why I called it Corvette. 2200 is definitely light frigate.

There are many versions of the Gepard frigates, versions 1 to 5 with subversions in each of those numbers.

The version used by Vietnam is 3.9 which is heavier and wider (14.4 meters), max. water displacement is 2200 tons.

Wikipedia is written and edited by anybody that wishes to do so, can't trust the information there. Much of the information about the Vietnamese Gepard is taken from the general information of the basic Gepard design without realizing the differences in each version.

I meant that I didn't hear anything new lately. Of course the contract was signed and there are 2 in construction and they are supposed to be delivered by 2017, but not much news since the contract was signed. And as usual, not a word or announcement from VN.

Now, there is something that I don't understand. If Vietnam has already has Gerald, why bother to buy Sigma?

Simply because everything that Vietnam has until now is Russian tech and Vn wants to experience western tech and not be depending just on Russia.

The Sigma 9814 of Vietnam has a number of advantages over the Gepard:

1) Much better search radar, the Thales Smart S-MK2 as an example, can detect a cruise missile at 50 km distance while the Gepard radar will do it at 15 km distance.

2) Better air defense with the MICA system.

3) Full hangar for the helicopter while the Gepard hangar only covers the nose of the helicopter.

4) Top notch combat management system (CMS) Tacticos from Thales, considered the best in Europe.

5) Better sonars (from Thales also).

6) less draft (very important to operate in the shallow waters of the south china sea).

7) Better overall technology and a better modular design of the ship when it comes to construction purposes.

Muchas gracias, mi amigo. Yo gusto mucho su fotos de Fuerza Naval Vietnam. Sorry, my spanish language skill is very weak. But I look forward to the pictures and to more interaction with you here.

Hasta manana,

Arigato! Ha ha, good Spanish, not bad amigo. Where do you live in USA? You did study in Berkeley right? Love that town, great atmosphere there. Well, if you spend some time in California, can't avoid learning some Spanish. I also look forward to more interaction with you here.

Ok, first in a series about Vietnamese naval ships. One ship class per post; I'll send them throughout the day as I get some free time. Since I can only do 10 attachments per post, It may take 2 posts for each class ship.

Molniya class ships. 550 tons, 56 meters long. 16 antiship missiles (remarkable for such an small ship), Igla air defense missiles. 8 ships in the class (4 in service and 4 under construction), there is an option for 4 more. First 2 built in Russia, the others in VN under license.

Hi Amigo, thanks for the pictures!! This is more than what i expected, so thanks a bunch for these!

Vietnam definitely has an impressive array of Molniya class ships. Impressive.

I added a second post, you have 20 pics for the Molniya class now.

That ship is quite ok, but the tech is a bit old, no stealth and weak air defenses. Vn is developing a domestic follow on design, so I think they will keep the numbers at 8.

I saw in another thread that you were asking for info on SCS claims. I have a ton of info, articles, analyst's reports, etc, but I have everything saved as pdf files. Its actually much easier to email if you like.

Vietnam has a healthy mixture of Petya Class, Molniya, Tarantul, and now even the Sigma and Gepard class ships. It should really acquire more ships with a stronger Air defense capabilities, heck even getting more Tarantul class as it helps provide a healthy fleet matrix. They have one BPS-500 class ASW corvette, they should get at least 3 more of this to provide a credible ASW force.

Overall, in my honest opinion, the Vietnamese Navy carries one HELL of a punch. I mean, its not as sophisticated as say the ROKN, even the PLAN. But still, any foreign navy is going to get their a$$es handed to them if they have a coastal engagement.

I'm not even considering or counting Vietnam's coastal ASM batteries.

Very deadly and capable. These Vietnamese. Shiet...

The BPS-500 was a failed design, it had a design flaw, it could not fire the missiles while moving. When they did the sea trials and discovered that, they abandoned the project. A second unit was under construction and it was scrapped. They just upgraded the ship and fixed that problem. That's the end of the project.

The ASW function will be carried out by the Sigmas and the second batch of Gepard, those have the anti sub package.

Actually, the navy is weak right now, things will be much better in 2017 when all these projects are finished.

the big equalizer is the sub force with 2 Kilo subs and 4 more coming.

The operational doctrine of the VN navy for now is to avoid direct engagements (except the subs) and to do hit and run attacks on targets of opportunity and disrupt enemy shipping. Its a littoral force for now, but growing.

.

For coastal engagements, VN is looking quite strong and more stuff will be coming.

In addition to what you read about the yakhon batteries that VN has now (and the legacy stuff), they also have coastal batteries based of the KH-35 (8 missiles per TEL). One problem with VN is that they are super secretive about everything military to the point that is frustrating, so have to use other channels in order to find out what is going on and still, you can only go so far. There is a lot of stuff going on, much more than what most people suspect.

The Tarantuls are being replaced by the Molniyas. Yes, fleet air defense is a big weakness right now, they rely on the air force.

Ah, I remember reading that there are 4 more under construction. I'm guessing those 4 new ones will replace the Tarantuls. But do you think the Vietnamese Navy can really afford to retire those Tarantuls? Those should be kept in service, at least for coastal defense.

Interesting. So that's the reason why there is only 1 ship in this class for the VN. Well, its good to hear that the Gepard and Sigmas are inducted and will provide much needed ASW functionality.

An overall force of 6 Kilos. Good planning indeed.

Well, the last 2 Molniyas that came into service took over the HQ numbers of 2 Tarantuls, so I can't say for sure that all of them will get retired, but that action does suggest that. They are 30 year old ships. Use to be 6, now 4.

My friend, something is wrong with the third photo. :D

The third photo of which post, first or second?

In my computer all 20 pics are fine. Is anybody else having that problem?

The third photo of the post I quoted. They all show up fine, but look at that third photo carefully.
