PANO – Two frigates, the HQ-011 and the HQ-012, of the Vietnam People’s Navy on November 5th left Cam Ranh Military Port for Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines.

On board of the frigates are 228 officers and sailors, led by Rear Admiral Nguyen Van Kiem, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy.

This is the first time the Vietnamese naval ships have toured regional countries.

The visit is to carry out approved initiatives, build trust and enhance friendship, cooperation, mutual understanding and confidence between the Vietnam People’s Navy and the navies of Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines. It is also to requite the three countries’ navies’ visits to Vietnam before.

As planned, Vietnamese officers and sailors will have friendly sports activities, pay courtesy visits to representatives of the three countries’ navies, armies and authorities and conduct other activities.

Don't explain to the jealous. It's a waste of time and energy.

those frigates would visit Indonesia, and Ms. @madokafc may has chance to boarding those.

It looks beautifull guys, good to know that it would be docking at friendly ports in southeast asia. Wish it someday come to south asia aswell.

Light frigate or heavy corvette, those are the usual classifications for a ship of that size. Take your pick. Its the same for your Sigmas.
it is light frigate.
bro, I wonder if we can install Yakhont on the ship (indonesia does it)? the Uran missile is not such a mighty rocket.

yeah I hope we will make port calls to India in the near future as well.

Absolutely, that's one of the options in that ship. Keep in mind that what VN has chosen is not really the most powerful weapon systems; it could it have included medium range antiaircraft missiles, anti sub package, etc. VN choices were "light".

And the way we see it, even BrahMos.

The good thing about Vietnamese Navy is that we share a lot of similarity in our logistics having a mix of indigenous and Russian warships, similar to what they do.

There should be more serious military interaction between Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines. Remember, it is not just countries that can be adversaries with expansionist intentions; it can also be pirates and even more trained 'non-state' elements and random fishing tugboats full of 'protesting people' that could attack trade and other routes. Naval cooperation is therefore very important in building confidence and dispelling any distrust.

Absolutely!!!! Personally, I like the Indian approach of mixing weapon systems of different countries and integrate them in one platform such as using Russian radars, Indian sonars, Israeli air defense systems, etc, etc. I think VN is a bit too cautious in their approach and at the same time, they need to gain more experience.

I would like to see a Vietnamese warship using Brahmos, Oto Melara guns made in India under license, Indian sonars, Barak 8, etc.

We call our Sigma as Corvette. Frigate is for a ship with the tonnage that surpass 2000 tonnes. But, well, that's for us. It is free for everybody to call a 1500 tonnes ship as Frigate or Destroyer or even Cruiser.

The Gepard is 2200 tons.

The definitions are not written in stone, Each Navy follows its own criteria. The Indian navy considers the Kamorta ASW ships with more than 3000 tons as corvettes. Blue water navies normally tend to consider those classifications by using heavier tonnage. Littoral navies will do the opposite. Another way to define the ship is according to the weapon systems.

In my opinion light frigate fits well since the Vietnamese navy is a littoral navy and the weapon systems of the Gepard are typical of a frigate and includes a helicopter also. Full frigate I would say is for 3000 tons and up and a corvette should be less than 2000 tons.
