Vietnam Will Not Stop Russia From Using Cam Rahn Bay Base - Think Tank Head

Colonel Le The Mau, a senior military official from the country's Military Strategy Institute, told Sputnik Việt Nam that the United States' demand that Vietnam stop allowing Russian refueling planes to land at Cam Ranh airbase amounts to interference in the country's affairs:

"Washington's demand that Vietnam [stops allowing refueling planes to land] can be seen as nothing else but interference in the internal affairs of Vietnam, a sovereign state which determines its own policies for cooperating with its friends and partners."

Colonel Le added that the Russian refueling planes are not military planes, and that their landing at the Cam Ranh airbase is part of the base's international functions. In addition, Colonel Le said that it is Vietnam's decision to allow the refueling planes to land:

"Russia is Vietnam's strategic partner, we are developing our cooperation in the military and technical sphere, one of the elements of which is providing the Cam Ranh airbase for the landing of Russian refueling planes."

US Bullies Vietnam to Stop Military Cooperation With Russia

On Wednesday, it was revealed that the US is pushing Vietnam to stop letting Russia use Cam Ranh Bay military base. The Russian air force recently used the facility to refuel nuclear-capable bombers. US officials say Russian bomber planes have increased their number of flights in the region and even conducted what the Pentagon called “provocative flights” around Guam, a US territory in the Pacific that is home to a large military base.

Cam Ranh was the main US Air Force base during the Vietnam War. From 1979 until 2002, the Soviet Union and later Russia leased the base, turning it into its largest naval base abroad. In 2004, part of the base was reconstructed and opened as a civilian airport.

the said colonel is just of the many voices in vietnam. in reality, thing is full of complexity.

A servant cannot have two masters. Vietnam was too greedy in believing it could service two masters when all other servants have to pick and choose one.

One officer voices his opinion, nothing more nothing less. Pay no heed to media sensationalism.
exactly, just one voice. as far as this concerns I read the government has not made any statement yet. by the way, not everyone knows that cam ranh bay not only serves a service and patrol stations for russian strategic bombers, but the pacific fleet. without the bay, russia can hardly project power far from home.

When an officer dares to made that kinda of statement in public the reality is closer than we think.
when we signed an accord with russia, nobody has forseen the relationship between russia and america escalating and the cold war returning. the officier is just one of the many voices.
certainly, now russia brings vietnam into a very difficult situation as their bombers conduct provocatative flights around the US base Guam. Nobody knows if the bombers are equipped with nuclear weapons.

Don't you guys like got the "three nos" which include not allowing foreign military to use your bases? Which your country seems to contradict. The US concern is completely legit here.

if I recall the manchus and mongols were your masters. didn´t you chinese stage military exercises with both america and russia recentty? following your logic, you are the true slave.

This logic is so bad it's hard to know where to begin.

1. In a country as big as China, the leader has to come from somewhere and his/her origins cannot represent the entire country. Your "logic" would imply that Anhuinese were the masters during the Ming dynasty, or that Kenyan-Americans are the masters of the USA during Obama's tenure. The reality is that no matter where the rulers came from, all Chinese rulers in history have been culturally Chinese and within the Chinese cultural family. The same cannot be said of your master-servant relationship with the USA/Russia, because i) you evidently aren't from the same family nor share a common culture and ii) USA/Russia maintain their own countries and are clearly separate from you.
2. The Manchu and Mongol era did not occur at the same time.
3. Joint military exercises are voluntary and egalitarian activity. Hosting foreign military bases is a different story, because there is clearly a master and servant in that arrangement. Likewise, letting foreign countries violate your sovereignty and dictate your policy is clearly a characteristic of a servant.

basically we still stick to the 3 No´s, but chinese aggression in the region has pushed us to soften the policy a bit. the cooperatation with russia does not target the US. it is just a political signal we want to send to china.

again, the bay serves as sevice and patrol station for russia bombers and pacific fleet. with some exceptions, officiers and high ranking officials, russia has no troops on our land.

You take the viet's nonsense too seriously. Mongol and Manchurian moved their Capital in Beijing while French's Capital always Paris.

The guy is the Viet's proxy on a mission voicing out to test the water
The ball is now in the US court
The Viet government wont say a thing yet to embarrass itself
The drama is just beginning to unfold
