ROME — The Vatican said Wednesday that it had concluded a treaty to recognize Palestinian statehood, a symbolic but significant step welcomed by Palestinians but upsetting to the Israeli government.

Formal recognition of a Palestinian state by the Vatican, which has deep religious interests in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories that include Christian holy sites, lends a powerful signal of legitimacy to the efforts by the Palestinian Authority’s president, Mahmoud Abbas, to achieve statehood despite the long paralyzed Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Israel has grown increasingly alarmed about the increased international acceptance of Palestine as a state since the United Nations upgraded the Palestinian delegation’s status in 2012 to that of a nonmember observer state. A number of European countries have also signaled their acceptance of Palestinian statehood.

A statement from a joint commission of Vatican and Palestinian diplomatic officials, posted on the Vatican news website, said “the work of the commission on the text of the agreement has been concluded,” and that it would be submitted for formal approval and for signing “in the near future.”

Hanna Amireh, head of a Palestinian committee on church affairs, said the treaty was a broad one regarding the Vatican’s interests in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, including the standing of churches and church courts and taxes on church charities, institutions and lands, as well as other cultural and diplomatic matters. He said it had been under negotiation for about a year.

“The Vatican is the spiritual capital of the Catholics, and they are recognizing Palestine, that’s the chief importance,” said Mr. Amireh, who is also a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee. The move counters an image of Palestinians as militants or terrorists, he added, as a “recognition of the Palestinian character that has a clear message for coexistence and peace.”

A senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under diplomatic protocol, said Israel was “disappointed to hear” about the Vatican’s use of the term “state” in its new treaty.

”This step does not advance the peace process and pushes the Palestinian leadership further away from returning to a direct and bilateral negotiation,” the official said in a statement, echoing Israel’s reactions to a series of recent parliamentary resolutions on Palestinian statehood in European nations. “Israel will study the agreement and consider its next steps accordingly.”

Pope Francis, the leader of the world’s 1 billion Catholics, has long signaled his wish for a Palestinian state. For the past year, the Vatican had informally referred to the country as “state of Palestine,” in its yearbook as well as in its program for Francis’ 2014 visit to the Holy Land.

Won't be long before Evangelists/Jews start theorizing that Pope Francis is actually the anti-christ....matter convienience....one time Obama today throne will go to Pope

Nothing will change. The US holds all the keys to solving this conflict. The powerful Jewish lobby in the US won't allow any two-state solution in the near future.

The world is not ready to sanction Israel in the same fashion that Apartheid South Africa was nor is there much focus on the conflict in this age and time unlike not long ago. Mainly due to all the other conflicts in the ME.

That is why the duty of the 3.5 million or so Arab-Americans to influence this conflict is greater than among any other group of Arabs. Simply because they live and can influence what is going on in the country that control all the keys to solving this tiresome conflict.

Because solving it is crucial for the future of the region.

Stick to your studies in Europe where you were born and stop flapping your gums about conflicts you know nothing about.

There will be no state for the Arabian occupiers re-branded as 'palestinians' in the 60's (using Gulf money to 'legitimise' the entity at the UN), until they and their sponsors recognise the Jewish state of Israel, recognise no 'right of return' and recognise all the Jewish shrines, artifacts and history in the so-called 'West Bank' that the 'palestinians' have been trying to destroy for decades.

The only 'right of return' I recognise, is their right to return to Egypt (all those so-called 'palestinians' whose names are Al-Masri) Jordan, Hejaz, Syria etc.

Not a single brick was laid by the so-called 'palestinians' to build Jerusalem, yet somehow this entity thinks they own it.

No one gives a hoot what the Catholics say. The pioneers of anti-semitism, the pioneers of religious oppression.

I wrote up a long response but my browser crashed, so let me just bring up a few points. My response was pretty heated, so I guess it's your lucky day. :D

I will not write that up again, anyways to the point I wanted to make. This signifies that Christian world is reexamining its decades old approach to the I/P conflict. Christian world is largest economic/military power base in world. They have influence towards this conflict as they're main backers of Israel. This move means that the Christian world as a whole is getting tired of the Jewish game being played of give and get no return. All while Jewish American neocon elements try fanning flames between Christians/Muslims solely to divert attention from peace process. Because West was expecting Israeli gov't to adopt two state solution. Israel is adopting colonial approach that intensifies each year and every election as the budget for settlements increases.

I'm not sure if you're upset that they won't act in Syria or against Iran, that is because they have less influence there. I could get really indepth regarding that especially suggesting to look in mirror and see that it's actually Arab nations which aren't stepping up to table because of survival concerns. We have to work from within and get it done, you're underestimating the Arab role in the region just as you're underestimating Arab role to I/P conflict.

Wow, lots of anger in your post....Christian world should brace theirselves from soon to be 'ISIS' attacks on Vatican. We know that's what Mossad perfects, the false flag attack.

PS: Nobody recognizes Israel as 'Jewish' state otherwise that would undemocratic and apartheid state, right of return is no matter of negotiation, it is reality whether you like it or not. Israel also has no declared borders. And 'recogonziing' Israel can mean so many things, Israel already exists so your suggestion makes no sense.
