BBC:Haqqani says US wants him to join Afghan gov't - UK news

Siraj Haqqani said he's been approached by the US to join the Afghan government.

He denied that his militant group was behind the killing of the top Afghan peace envoy.

The Pakistan-based Haqqani network is affiliated with both the Taliban and al-Qaida and has been described US and other western nations as the top security threat in Afghanistan. The group has been blamed for hundreds of attacks, including a 20-hour siege of the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters last month. The group s is led by Jalaludin Haqqani, but the ailing leader has relinquished most operational control to one of his sons, Siraj.

Last week, US officials accused Pakistan s spy agency of assisting the Haqqanis in attacks on Western targets in Afghanistan.
The United States and other members of the international community have in the past blamed Pakistan for allowing the Taliban, and the Haqqanis in particular, to retain safe havens in the country s tribal areas along the Afghan border particularly in North Waziristan.

The outgoing chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, has also claimed Pakistan s military spy agency helped the group.

However, Haqqani told the BBC Pashtu service that while the group had contacts with a number of spy agencies, including that of Pakistan, during the Soviet invasion, he said there are now "no such links that could be beneficial."

"Right from the first day of American arrival till this day not only Pakistani, but other Islamic and other non Islamic countries including America contacted us and they still doing so, they are asking us to leave the ranks of Islamic Emirates," he said referring to the Taliban leadership.

He said that the outsiders have promised an "important role in the government of Afghanistan," as well as negotiations.

I bet its a Taliban (Good and the Bad one), Haqqanis, Al-quieda, LeT etc etc coalition government under the able leadership of Pentagon coming up soon.

Yeah, the Haqqani interview on BBC did show some glaring realities.

The most important being that he denied the involvement of his group in the killing of Burhanuddin Rabbani. These terror organizations always claim it at the first instant to try and get the glory and send their message across, he did not, so i do take it they did not do it.

you see usa is playing double game here, they want Pakistan to attack haqqanis and here they want them to join Afghan government.

USA wants that we take action against each and every group so that they became direct security threat to Pakistan then USA will make an agreement with them and they will form A GOVT in Afghanistan that will be full of anti Pakistan elements and will become a permanent threat for us ...... but it will not happen we can not afford to make everyone our enemy..... we should have our own policy that will protects our interests

nobody died in usa after 911, but Pakistanis are dieing everyday.

we should not do any more operations inside Pakistani territory.

someone rightly said that we facing 9/11 everyday .......
what they think that their citizens superior than our people ? are not our people are human and are dying everyday in bomb blasts because of USA's so called WOT ?
we should have independent foreign policy ....... if they think that life of their soldier and citizen is more precious then we should tell them that we will do whatever will be best for the safety of our people , our soldiers and our security

Why don't Afghanistan and Pakistan just Merge ? If failed with Bangladesh because you guys were so far ? Karzai is right the durand line is Separation dividing two brothers your going to have to merge.

Be rest assured neither the Haqqani nor the Afghan Talib will be designated terrorist groups - Why not? Because a negotiated settlement is one pillar of the edifice the US must have in place in order to evacuate the majority of her forces - the other is to win bases in Afghanistan.

So what was Mullen's statement all about?

Mullen and the DoD are frustrated that Pakistan had not put more pressure on the Haqqani to set US terms.

So where does the US go from here??

First some preliminaries : the prize is not Afghanistan, it's Pakistan -

Can the US win this prize? Not a snow flake's chance in hell -- WHY NOT? Because Pakistan is unwilling and what the US, entirely inadvertently, has succeeded in doing, is to make sure that it is perceived in the most most negative of lights, at least to a majority of Pakistanis -- and there is always India to win, a greater prize to be sure, but the Indian strategic association with the US, includes as a essential ingredient, the delivery of Pakistan, something else that does not stand a snow flakes chance in hell -- and therefore Indian friends calibrate a new relationship with Pakistan, one that seems to allow the US greater geo-strategic isolation from both Pakistan and India.

Couldn't have said it any better.
