WASHINGTON: In a boost to India's 100 smart city programme, the US will help India in developing three such cities apart from joining hands with civil society and authorities to provide clean water and sewage facilities in 500 cities in the country.

The three cities are Allahabad, Ajmer and Visakhapatnam.

This announcement was made after the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama here on Wednesday.

The Indian government plans to develop 100 smart cities and in this regard an allocation of Rs 7,060 crore was proposed in the Union Budget.

While presenting the Budget for 2014-15, finance minister Arun Jaitley had said the Prime Minister has a vision of developing 100 smart cities as satellite towns of larger cities and by modernizing the existing mid-sized cities.

"With development reaching an increasingly large number of people, the pace of migration from the rural areas to the cities is increasing," Jaitley had said.

Winding up his whirlwind five-day US visit on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi "thanked" America and called his trip a highly "successful and satisfactory".

What FANTASTIC news. Now only will the US provide direct help in developing 3 smart cities, It will provide assistance in providing clean water and sewage facilities in 500 cities in the country. :woot:

This is a LANDMARK assistance without any parallel. IF Modi can get the US to implement this, then We are well on our way to becoming a developed world.

100 cities will not be made in 5 years but in a period of 20 to 30 years.

In 20 years we will not be needing US help any more. This will be in the next 5 years.

Maybe or Maybe not,but the plan to devlop 100 cities will be carried out in 20 to 30 years and not just in 5 years because we neither have have that capability and money for doing that.Read more about Modi's plan.

5 saal me 40-50 nahi ho payega,,,yeh 8 ho jaye wohi badi baat hogi
If they start work in 1 or 2 cities in each state, that would be more than enough. They don't have to complete it,just start work in good pace.
Building 2-3 flyovers in Assam ensured Congress 3 terms.Starting work in Smart Cities is more than enough.

Let me put it this way, India is 13 years behind China.

Does china need US help to provide sewage and clean drinking water to its cities ?

I hope the work happens in the next 5-10 years, do you have a link that says otherwise ?

I am talking about devlopment of smart cities and not assistance in sewage systems of cities and event that will take more than 10 years.

Let me find a link for my earlier claim.

Building sewage and providing drinking water is the HARD part. Not to mention expensive with no hope of much returns.

Providing electricity and broadband to 100 cities and providing computers and software to link everything is much easier and with hopes of much better ROI.

I am seriously more exited about the news about providing sewage and drinking water to 500 cities. Our Life expectancy will go up by at least 5 years.

Good news. Another 3 more PMs like Modi ji to serve full terms each and India would be a far different country from the current backward mess which it currently is in. Perhaps Rahul should undergo training with Modi ji :D
