The White House has threatened “appropriate action” if it is proved Iran shot down the passenger plane over Tehran, killing 176 people.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a thinly veiled warning after the Boeing 737-800 jet was brought down.

Western intelligence officials believe the aircraft was targeted after being misidentified just hours after Iran fired 16 rockets at coalition bases in Iraq.

The death toll included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians and four Britons.

The four were: Mohammed Zadeh, 40, who owned a dry cleaners; BP engineer Sam Zokaei, 42; PhD student and engineer Saeed Tahmasebi, 35; and Arad Zarei, 17.

Arad recently relocated to Canada having attended St Mary’s Primary School in Twickenham, South West London.

Horrifying moment 'missile' smashes into Ukranian jet killing all 176 on board

His dad Mehrzad Zarei told Canadian media: “He was the apple of my eye and his energetic demeanour and caring personality left a lasting impression on his classmates and many friends.”

When Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 came down, Iranian air defences were on high alert for retaliatory strikes. But Tehran yesterday denied claims it shot down the plane – thought to have been struck by a Tor-M1 missile.

Speaking at the White House, Mr Pompeo warned: “We do believe it is likely the plane was brought down by an Iranian missile.

"We will learn more about what happened to that aircraft and when we get the results of that investigation, I am confident that we and the world will take appropriate actions in response.”

British Government sources stressed they believed the crash was a “tragic accident”, rather than deliberate.

The head of Iran’s civil aviation organisation, Ali Abedzadeh, challenged Western governments to share evidence proving Flight PS752 was struck by a weapon.

He said: “What is obvious for us, and what we can say with certainty, is that no missile hit the plane.”

Washington and Tehran appeared to have stepped back from the brink of war after the barrage of rockets fired at coalition forces in Iraq this week.

The attack came in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Baghdad last week.

The Stop the War Coalition will today march through London opposing military action against Iran. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is due to address protesters.

Labour and other critics of the raid have claimed it was illegal. But the White House has defended the killing, saying American lives were under imminent threat when Soleimani landed in Iraq.

Mr Pompeo insisted there was intelligence pointing towards an “imminent attack” and “active plotting”.

Retaliate? It's a Ukranian airliner not an American one. And if it's accidental, its these douchebags that started these chain of events that led to this error.

US is the self proclaimed world police. Always looking for excuse to give freedom. Sometimes when there is no excuse, they make one up

Are the Americans totally mad? An airliner shot down by mistake, if that was the case, needs retaliation?

And bombing two major US bases doesn't?:omghaha:

President Trump Thinks He Deserves a Nobel Peace Prize
This comes just days after he threatened to bomb cultural sites in Iran.

President Donald Trump told a crowd that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, days after threatening to bomb cultural sites in Iran and ordering the killing of the country’s top commander.

During a Thursday rally in Ohio, Trump told fans that he has helped stop several wars, saying, “I made a deal. I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace prize for saving the country. I said ‘did I have something to do with it?’ Yeah. But you know that’s the way it is. As long as we know, that’s all that matters. I saved a big war, I saved a couple of ‘em.”

The presumed head of the country Trump alluded to was Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for helping to end a 20-year conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. As for the “big war” Trump says he helped save, it’s unclear what he meant.

Last week, Trump ordered the killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the top military and intelligence commander in Iran. A few days later, Trump threatened to bomb cultural sites in Iran. And on Tuesday night, Iran showed its first sign of retaliation for Soleimani’s killing by launching missiles at Iraqi bases that house U.S. forces. No casualties were reported in those strikes, but many officials believe an Iranian missile may have shot down a Ukraine International Airlines flight on Wednesday. The plane crash killed all 176 people aboard.

Well Iranian Authorities were so nervous after missile attack that first object entered their air space was shot down....its natural reaction of fear and should not be reprimanded.

Ukraine is where US based its military in southern Europe so.

Considering Tehran is hundreds of km from Iranian border. It wouldn't be the first object that entered Iranian airspace.

US killed one iranian general. In retaliation they first killed 50 of their own in stampede and then 82 more by shooting a passenger plane. More than 130 iranians killed along with general, zero US casualties and they think they slapped the US, what idiots.

It was an accident.. but shows extreme incompetency of Iran.. all flights should have been grounded...
Someone must pay a heavy price inside Iran!
