US offered highest level of tech for fighter jets: Pentagon.

Washington, August 25, 2011

Asserting that the United States offered the highest level of technology to India for its fighter jets, a top Pentagon official expressed his disappointment on New Delhi's decision not to opt for those but added that India US relationship is not predicated on any one sale. "I was really
amazed and impressed with the level of technology we had agreed to release to India in these fighter aircrafts. This is the level of technology we had not looked to release to anywhere," Robert Scher, deputy assistant secretary of defense for South and Southeast said.

He expressed hope that the experience gained from bidding process of fighter jets would help the US companies to get more business from India in the future.

"(India's decision) surprised many people on both sides," he said in response to a question after delivering his remarks on India-US defense relationship organised by New American Foundation, a Washington-based think tank.

"I am absolutely disappointed. But understanding that how these sales fit within our overall strategy and the value of this relationship, I think we would continue to work from and subsequent sales are frankly easier because the work we did with very high profiled sale upfront," he said.

However, Scher said India-US relationship was not predicated on any one sale.

"Although military sales are deeply intertwined with defense cooperation, they are not the only indicator or marker of our success. I view defense sales as a mechanism to enable new training and exchange opportunities between our militaries," he said.

"We are also now enabling new levels of technology transfer through our defense sales. And importantly, there is an economic aspect to these sales, which supports the bottom line for US industry and in many cases, helps lead to job creation," he said.

Noting that in 1990s, India and the US had virtually no defense trade relationship, he said "today it is nearing $6 billion in Foreign Military Sales alone, not counting Direct Commercial Sales."

It's clear that the Indian military of the future will routinely use US equipment, in all services, across a full range of mission sets," he said.

"In February, I had the honour of attending the C-130J induction ceremony at Air Force station Hindan with the chief of staff of the US Air Force, general Schwartz.

Let's quit derailing the thread. The main reason that India shies from advanced technology deals like the JSF program or the F-18 with Raytheon AESA radar package is chiefly due to import restriction protocols enforced by the US like CISMOA.Purchasing the P8I without datalink or GPS components is fine, those can be supplemented by our own datalink and radar components for navigation and communication.

But to buy into the F-35 program without the same is a whole different ballgame.I think India wants the United States to come around this issue and offer us the program without India inking the CISMOA.It has happened before with the case of the civilian nuclear deal. The United States looked the other way about India's noncompliance to the NPT and went ahead with the agreement regardless.

^^^ yes absolutely true. Also there are many horror stories to do with what kind of "extras" the US fits to its AC. Just look at Pakistan the restrictions they have imposed make the planes almost unusable- the have to seek the US permission when using them, they can't be used in offensive action without US permission, they have to be based in an entirely separate base away from Chinese prying eyes, the planes have to be physically inspected by US officals many times a year, all accesories are sealed and can't be opened or customised etc. I think there is a thread on PDF about such things. And there was a TuAF F-16 that crashed and in the wreckage the TuAF technicians found many components and transmitters they had never seen before. And many agree there is likely to be a "kill-switch" and all of their kit can be tracked via GPS.

This is fine for puppet states but for a country like India who has many other options anyway there is no need to sell their souls to the devli like this.

no need to start conspiracy theories guys.

Indian airforce is fully integrated into Russian hardware. They have joint programs of TOT and long term commitments.

Switching all the logistics, contracts, comfort factor, and above all at higher cost is not going to work for Indians.

This was not true in case of the few transport planes so Indians bought from US. However the story for the fighter planes is different.

No amount of cajoling from USA would work on this. It has nothing to do with emotions, just the cold hard facts make Indians buy mostly from Russia and a little bit from Europe.

Peace.

Huh?I didn't get what you were hinting at with conspiracy theories. It's undeniably becoming clear that India is leveling it's defence imports out as opposed to be heavily reliant on the Russians. The winning tender of the MMRCA is going to be a Western camp no matter the outcome.Transport,Radar,Naval and UAV tenders are already going in favor of other nations. These aren't theories, this is the reality of the current scenario.

Have money to spend, will get the good stuff. The tricky situation of negotiating remains.

peace be unto you too bro!
