A shooting from rail gun would be similar to deliver a hypersonic ballistic missile at Mach 7, to the same range of a standard antiship cruise missile ( 160-180 kilometers ) which is much slower.

Very low cost for one shot, high effectiveness.

Sure it may be an electromagnetic weapon but such weapon and relies on electric power but if it were further developed and miniaturized, you will likely have a .30 caliber battle rifle that is as powerful as a 30mm RARDEN autocannon, the only issue is recoil unless the weapon will be held like a bazooka.

And oh, coilgun is different from railgun despite both using electromagnetism.

no, recoil's not the only issue. The soldier will have to carry many dozens of kgs of capacitors and similar weight in batteries...It's not that easy.

It's more convenient having all of that energy stored in the form of gunpowder in the cartridge.
