During the session break, she asked about me and upon learning that I was a Muslims, she inquired about my opinion on Palestinian issue. I told her what I believed (and still believe). She did not argue much and kept quiet. Following several minutes, I asked if she was a Jew and her reply was 'yes'. My heart sank and I though my career was over as far as NIH was concerned.

I returned back to Atlanta and got busy in my research. After a couple of days, Craig my boss forwarded me an email and mentioned that NIH wanted to support my visit to Calgary, Canada to present my work at the Keystone Symposium. I noticed that the email was from Pat Barron, who had praised my work (during CFAR 2008 meeting) and urged Craig to send me to Keystone symposium.

The moral of this story is, professional Jews are professional first, and Jews later. I wish I could narrate a similar story about some Muslim professional I have been interacting with. Religious nepotism (or we call it pedigree) is there but is not as much as many think.

Or we could just make a law forcing them to renounce there dual citizenship to foreign countries before running for a political position.

My doctoral content adviser and one of my reviewer for my Ph.D dissertation are both Americans who practice Judaism. They are , in my honest opinion, one of the best examples of the upholding the Honor Code in academic studies. I've contributed to 2 published journal articles with one of them and he was the one who encouraged me to join the research group knowing that this would help me in the future. The same Professor / Adviser was the one who wrote me a stellar letter of recommendation for membership into SIOP (Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists). The same one who invited me to his son's Bar Mitzvah. To say that Jews have religious nepotism is absolutely unfair because the ones who've I've close relationship with are actually very accepting and encouraging.

I've had no negative experiences with Americans who practice Judaism. On the contrary, I have very high and fond views of them.

If you're convinced that a renunciation of another citizenship unambiguously clears the question of loyalty, then everything is fine (as I said previously, I still believe that people can be loyal to two different countries). Ted Cruz was elected Senator while still a Canadian citizen. Michele Bachman was elected to Congress while still a Swiss citizen. I'm sure I can find more examples for you, but I want to be fair by pointing out examples from "my side" to show that I view this as a non-partisan issue.

If you don't care about Canada's laws in relation to the presidency, then we are agreed that dual citizenship is a non-issue.

Let's all review the definition of 'Dual Nationality' in its Applicability to the United States of America and the Laws of the United States.


Section 101(a)(22) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) states that “the term ‘national of the United States’ means (A) a citizen of the United States, or (B) a person who, though not a citizen of the United States, owes permanent allegiance to the United States.” Therefore, U.S. citizens are also U.S. nationals. Non-citizen nationality status refers only individuals who were born either in American Samoa or on Swains Island to parents who are not citizens of the United States. The concept of dual nationality means that a person is a national of two countries at the same time. Each country has its own nationality laws based on its own policy. A U.S. national may acquire foreign nationality by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. national may not lose the nationality of the country of birth. Also, a person who is automatically granted another nationality does not risk losing U.S. nationality. However, a person who acquires a foreign nationality by applying for it may lose U.S. nationality. In order to lose U.S. nationality, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign nationality voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. nationality.

Intent can be shown by the person's statements or conduct. The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause. Claims of other countries on dual national U.S. nationals may conflict with U.S. law, and dual nationality may limit U.S. Government efforts to assist nationals abroad. The country where a dual national is located generally has a stronger claim to that person's allegiance.

However, dual nationals owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country. They are required to obey the laws of both countries. Either country has the right to enforce its laws, particularly if the person later travels there. Most U.S. nationals, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country. Use of the foreign passport does not endanger U.S. nationality. That's the best thing about Israelis, they come to US, work their *** off to get into top position in the society, and use their influence to sway the opinion in their favor. I want the same policy to be taken by fellow Indians in US/EU.

They are still working on it and are even seem to be getting there.
