DHAKA, May 13, 2019 (BSS) – The United States (US) has expressed its keenness to invest in the country’s different sectors, including energy, infrastructure, ICT, LNG and dredging.

Assistant Secretary for Global Markets of US Department of Commerce Ian Steff today expressed the interest of investment when he called on Private Industry and Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister Salman Fazlur Rahman at his Gulshan office in the city, said a press release.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Robert Miller was also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, Salman said Bangladesh has achieved remarkable success in socio-economic activities, including poverty alleviation, food sufficiency, agriculture and infrastructure.

He outlined the government’s future plans to improve the country’s business environment for attracting more foreign direct investment (FDI).

Ian Steff applauded Bangladesh’s progress and said American companies are showing their interest to make new investment and expand the existing operations in the country.

He said that American companies are interested in the energy, infrastructure, ICT, LNG sectors and particularly dredging.

Please keep the 25% tariff on China and even increase it. Relocate those industries to BD. We can make those at a cheaper rate because of our cheaper labor cost.

When we will understand the realpolitik? :disagree:

That exactly is the realpolitik. We will take the benefits as much as we can without giving them any strings.

Giving them strings in return for benefits is donkey politik.

You can look at India a next door neighbor who did this for long. They currently have good relations with Russia as well as US, purchasing weapons from both. They have massive issues with China, at the same time keen to get Chinese investment and trade. They are best friends with Israelis, yet big trade and investment with Arabs. They have good relationship with BD as well as Burma while not taking any side in the Rohingya debacle. Posting emoticons don't change anything.

Anyway this is going off topic, let's move on to the thread topic.

USA have been playing a key role in our economy for quite sometine now. There's nothing wrong if we want them to further enhance their cooperation.

Our highest export earning comes from USA. If superpowers like USA really wants to have influence in BD policies they have all sorts of other means to do it.

To become a developed country using US help, BD needs to absorb US/Western values as well. On one hand we have the example of S.Korea/Japan and on the other hand middle east. Its upto BD which way it wants to go.

A friend to all is a friend to none.

After sometime even Bangladesh will overtake india on every HDI related indexes. Indian way isnt worth following...

We can emulate both. We can try and emulate Korea, Japan in getting investment and developing ourselves and at the same time emulate India to not give up an inch of their sovereignty. Giving any strings to the Americans is exactly like the East India company who said to Alibardi Khan that they are only here for trade. Subcontinent does not need another East India Company, we need to be prudent.

Beggers can not be choosers mate. In this age of globalisation no country is totally sovereign. We should emulate SK, Japan and india isnt worth mentioning...

We are not beggars, you are wrong there. There are many investors in the world, they invest to make money for themselves not to do any favor to the destination country. If we can make our country attractive for investment, they will come for their own interest, if we can't make it attractive, they won't come no matter how much we beg. It's cold business, nothing else. In that regard we can emulate Korea, Japan and China. When it comes to not giving up an inch of sovereignty, India is a shining example, we can emulate them in that respect.
