US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis resigned on Thursday, stating in a letter to President Donald Trump that he was stepping down because his world view was different from that of the president.

The US media reported that Secretary Mattis went to the White House on Thursday afternoon to persuade Trump to keep American troops in Syria but when he was rebuffed, he gave his resignation letter to the president.

“My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues,” Secretary Mattis wrote.

“We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances,” he added.

“Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defence whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.”

Secretary Mattis, however, said that he would stay till February 28 to allow sufficient time for a successor to be nominated and confirmed.

He wrote that he also wanted to ensure the change occurs well in advance of the transition of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September in order to ensure stability within the Defence Department.

Soon after Mattis left the White House, President Trump sent out two tweets, confirming that the Pentagon chief will leave at the end of February.

Various US media outlets, however, reported that although Secretary Mattis differed with the president on several major issue, Trump’s decision to withdraw 2,000 American troops from Syria convinced him that now was the time to leave.

The reports claimed that Secretary Mattis and senior US generals were also upset with Trump for using his Twitter account even to announce a decision of huge global implications.

In Washington, Secretary Mattis’s experience and stability were widely seen as a balance to an unpredictable president and his departure would add to the chaos and unease that surrounds the Trump administration.

Trump, who is seen in Washington as an outsider, had included several four-star generals in his cabinet and proudly called them “my generals.” By the time Secretary Mattis’s resignation takes effect at the end of February, all of Trump’s generals would be gone.

CNN reported on Thursday evening that after President Trump’s Syria tweet, senior US defence officials were also bracing themselves for another surprise announcement: the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

The withdrawal, if announced, would have even greater impact on global affairs than the expected pullout from Syria.

Administration sources told CNN that President Trump had not yet made a final decision on Afghanistan, but officials “are concerned and convinced that he might do so, and soon.”

The US has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, to train, advise and assist Afghan forces.

“Any withdrawal would be complicated by the fact that the United States is part of NATO's Resolute Support mission,” CNN warned.

Everyone except the US generals have realised that war is not achieving anything and unilateralism is causing more problems than solutions. It's a pity that it has taken a Trillion dollars of war to realise this. It's obvious that the soldiers are addicted to war and like an addicted gambler believe the victory is around the corner losing more and more in the process. They see everything from a soldier's eye and the only tool they know is one of war. Trump is a brave man to take on the US military let's see how long he lasts.

what makes you think Mattis is addicted to war ?

From his desire to continue war? But it is not just Mattis but Generals generally! It's just an observation; for example the police look at things from a police point of view, everyone is a suspect until evidence proves other wise; a doctor looks at you from a medical perspective, always looks for what ails you and is always diagnosing and prescribing, a priest looks for the act of god or orders of god and a soldier looks to combat to solve his ills; a politicians uses his words as a tool to resolve issues etc etc. Everyone uses tools he or she is comfortable with and a tool they are well practiced using.

Dude,

Operation Inherent Resolve, to defeat ISIS, was brilliantly executed by American armed forces across Iraq and Syria; mission accomplished. However, is this the end? You need allies on the ground to manage post-war environment.

Jim Mattis argue that it is not wise to abandon SDF in Syria to its fate. Donald Trump is not thinking long-term in regards to Syria, and this is why Mattis have tendered his resignation. He have a principled stand on this matter.

Trump should not alienate Pentagon or he will be the next John F. Kennedy.

Reminds me of whacky races cartoon, Dick Dastardly aka Uncle Sam was always able to win the race but by doing stupid dastardly things always lost. Whilst US plays the colonial games the Chinese have run to the front. Trump is a successful business man he knows when to cut his losses.

traitor Zionist-Evangelist scums in PENTAGON ,CIA even in White House who always forced American soldiers to die for Israel's interests

and traitor Zionist-Evangelist scums in PENTAGON ,CIA even in White House spent American People's money ( trillions of dollars ) for Israel's interests

Pathetic slave American People ( even more than 50 million of Americans lives in very poor condition ) and those traitor Zionist-Evangelist scums in PENTAGON ,CIA even in White House spent trillions of dollars for Israel's interests and thousands of American soldiers died for Israel's interests in the Middle East

Did you read about Empires !? one of reasons that empire start to lose their power and collapse is over-extensions .... USA is extending her arms too much , just imagine an economic crisis happen and Dollar just lose 30% of her value , that mean Pentagon budget would lose its 30% of her value ( Pentagon Budget is 700 billion $ , so if $ lose 30 % of its value , that mean 30 * 7 = 210 billion dollar budget shortage !!! ) and in one night so many USA armed units across the world can't effort to pay for their foods or maintain their base and devices !!!

An History lesson : Most allies will abandon empires by seeing the first sign of her weakness ...

for example , if China decide to use her $ reserve as a weapon , USA is fucked ....

Generals aren't educated to think about these things ....

Well though he was known by his anti-Iranian stance he was somehow the wise one on this whole Trump administration, now he's gone and might be replaced with another head case of Trump type ... I just wanna advise Donald that be careful Mr president this new year is gonna be tough.
And SDF has already announce total abandonment of fighting isis to go fight Turkey therefore Syria war is gonna get extended apparently unless all sides be ready to compromise for a better future.

Hmm we all knew donald was against any sort of war participation , anywhere in the world. Watch his imterviews from 30 years ago till now. It is very clear to his audience he likes Economic 4th generation war. He doesn't support battlefield war faught with blood and Men.

The primary purpose of the TSK was to establish a security corridor at a depth of 40 kilometers. However, a complete sweeping operation is currently planned, including ISIS. Mattis's entire Syrian plan is collapsed under the circumstances.
