US Congress throws crucial caveat into Pakistan ties – The Express Tribune

The US Congress is arguing against treating Pakistan as a strategic partner until the country agrees to sever its alleged ties with ‘terrorist outfits’.

In a letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry, House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce and Ranking Member Eliot Engel said the US should pursue a different approach with the Pakistani government, the BBC reported.

“We urge you to consider implementing travel restrictions, suspending portions of assistance, and sanctioning Pakistani officials that maintain relationships with designated terrorist groups,” the letter said.

It said the government of Pakistan has taken some steps to dismantle the infrastructure of al Qaeda and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), but has not done enough to combat other ‘designated foreign terrorist groups’ such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and Jaish-e-Muhammad.

This selective approach appears to stem from a misguided belief that some terrorist groups serve Pakistan’s foreign policy goals in India and Afghanistan,” it said.

The letter welcomed Pakistan’s recent announcement that it will soon ban the Haqqani network, but voiced skepticism that this will result in any real change to Pakistan’s policy.

After all, groups like the LeT and the JuD are ostensibly banned and still able to operate with virtual impunity,” it said.

“If Pakistan’s long-term prospects are to improve for all its people, its leaders must make a clear break from the policies of the past,” it said.

US Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki said she has not seen the letter and also could not confirm whether John Kerry had read it or not. She said the Congress’s letter would be replied.

Which needless to say is impossible.

Firstly, terror organizations like the LeT and JeM have been specifically raised, funded and trained by the Pak Establishment as strategic assets for PA's proxy war against India. This is part of PA's strategic doctrine which is written in stone and thus cannot be changed.

Secondly, they cannot be disbanded for fear of a backlash from the bearded Mullahs and the hardliners in Pakistan which are in a majority.

Thirdly, there's no way the PA can keep Kashmir on the boil without the help of these outfits. Their proxy war will collapse like a house of cards.

Going after the Haqqani network on which the Establishment has spent billions is again not possible as Pakistan will lose whatever leverage they have left in Afghanistan.

So it's going to be more of the same.

You soul seems to really shoothen when you post something against pakistan ..................Troll

Here lies the problem, this is not against Pakistan. It is for Pak to stop support to people who are tearing the nation apart from within and people like you dont even realise or accept it.

BTW its a Pak souce that I have quoted.

Okay, thank you USA. I think your time in Asia is limited anyway.
USA is all over the place now .. we were ally of USA when USA was on top ... but right now nobody would like to be ally of USA ... they are in lots of trouble with isis and their economy .........etc .... we are better off to bet on china and Russia now ..serving our own interests ..

The US congress is actually asking Pakistan for a full fledged civil war, nothing less. As if it the Afghanistan quagmire was not enough, They are really after holding back Pakistan, its economy and it future.
I am not used to use bad words but anyone can think what I would tell the American congress...

Ahhhhh you can't expect anything good from Americans even American citizens dont expect good from these banks and military organisation sponsored Congress-monkeys. The last time i checked it was NATO and Americans who were running from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pakistan should and must do what is best for Pakistan PERIOD

I wonder what US Congress thinks about CIA funding terrorists organizations in south and central America? CIA even admitted to be involved in drug smuggling to US so as to fund militias in south America. Anyone seen movie "kill the messenger"?

Somehow US thinks everyone has to forego its own interests and they should just pursue US interests. More vigorously than US itself. While they flee Afghanistan, we should destroy our country to fulfill their impossible dreams? Give me a break!
