The decline of labour unions in the US
Labour unions are under fire across the US, but do they have enough vitality to fight back?
Fault Lines Last Modified: 19 Dec 2011 07:26

(PakShah's comment: The Al Jazeera video says unemployment in USA is above 15% in the video.)

For decades, labour unions in the US have been on the decline. While they are widely credited with boosting safety standards and worker pay, many have received blame for wanting too much in times of a struggling economy.

Unemployment is at nine per cent and people are clamouring for jobs, unionised or not. And their greatest political ally, the Democratic party, has taken its support for granted, weakening its pull on the strings of power in Washington, DC.

A new battle has emerged in 2011 as Republican governors have taken on public sector unions, in some cases stripping them of rights that have been in place for 50 years. It is part of a trend that is happening in key swing states and may weaken democratic voting strength in next year's presidential election.

But organised labour has fought back hard. In Wisconsin, unions occupied the state capitol as 100,000 protesters took to the streets. In Ohio, voters overturned a law that was intended to greatly reduce the right that unions have in that state to bargain collectively.

Now as Occupy Wall Street galvanises Americans to take action against financial institutions and big corporations, labour unions have a new ally. But can organised labour harness the anger that everyday Americans are emitting or will this opportunity pass it by? Do labour unions still have the strength to organise or has their power waned to the point that they will no longer be a major player in American politics?

Their unemployment increases to 10% and their president goes on a world tour as a president cum sales man, looking for buyers for his country's products.

60 % of Pakistanis leave on under 2 USD a day and 22% live under 1 USD a day, and our leaders go on self recreation tours as and when they wish any time of the year to Europe, US, UAE.

Our leaders/politicians go to the poor to collect the votes and when they get the chair, they say, you dirty, good for nothing people, don't bother me with your "grievances" I have nothing to do about it, with hell you and your "grievances".

And the grievances are in fact caused by the leaders/politicians themselves.

our leaderz are nothing but bunch of bstrdz.....need to get rid of the leaderz who suck the blood out of the working class...The leaders never work so there shold be no leader cuz they are unproductive pplz of the country.....:smokin:

I am sure it will be taken off in due time - Americans are not like Pakistanis (Brainless). So Americans will fix their economy.

This is why thread like this exist: To give Pakistanis a temporary and false escape from their country's troubles by laughing at America's troubles while their country's leaders have a temporary but real escape from their country's troubles.

Seriously what are we talking about?? Is it about Unemployment in USA or UAE?

For US here is the Unemployment Rate graph from 1950 till 2011. Show me where do you see it hitting 20% or even 15 %

In the Al Jazeera documentary says the official uneployment in USA is 9%, but if you include part-time workers and those people who have given up their pay for work the unemployment is above 15%.

Are you sure their data is updated?

Wrong.. This data is in public domain.. one can simply google to get the right numbers which is 8.6% in Nov'2011

That is according to Obama formula. He cheated by removing all those people from Unemployed list who say were doctors but now got burger flipping jobs at McDonalds AND all those who tried looking for jobs and according to him have probably stopped looking for jobs now, because they are stay at home wives or husbands.

Real Unemployment may be between 15-20%.

Obama Unlikely to Harness Political Credit From 8.6 Unemployment Rate - The Daily Beast

One unfortunate caveat in otherwise good news is that joblessness hasn’t just gone down. Half of Friday’s drop was because of new jobs added, and the other half because about 315,000 people stopped looking for work, which means they’re still unemployed, just no longer counted in the labor force.

Or perhaps we're trying to say stop wasting money on bombs, (which are being fired in our direction) and give your industry some dollars too... Everyone will be happy!

Everybody has problems.

You know, it'd be awesome if US companies market consumer products more often other than weapons. Me like American cars :D

Hummerrrrr....

It would be more awesome if you actually do some research on what we manufacture. But that would be asking for intellectual honesty and THAT would be too much.
