NEW DELHI: Ukraine on Friday declared support for India's bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council and also agreed to fast-track a visa pact for accelerating economic ties.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, on a four-day visit to India, held wide-ranging talks with External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna. Cooperation to combat terrorism figured prominently in the talks.

The two ministers signed an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic passport holders. Gryshchenko conveyed Ukraine's support for India's permanent membership of an extended UN Security Council.

The two sides decided to hold the next meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission next year to impart further momentum to the economic and trade ties, the external affairs ministry said here.

It was also agreed to work out a mechanism to speed up the issuance of visas to make it easier for businessmen, tourists, students and others to travel in both directions.

The two sides discussed ways to expand military cooperation. Two years ago, India signed a pact with Spets Techno Export from Ukraine to upgrade AN-32 transport aircraft. Bilateral trade has touched $2.24 billion in 2010-11.

Our relations with Ukraine need to be developed further. Trade at 2.24 Billion $ we can do a lot better that that.

India and others should campaign against the unfair practices in the UN. Why aspire to a permanent security seat when clearly the system is unfair. Having said that I believe that India has more right than UK or France to a permanent security seat.

because it is easier to gain a permanent seat for oneself rather than asking the big 5 to leave their position....although i share your view, but the problem is UN was formed after WW2, and only the victors of that war were given permanent position, and now they don't want to leave it, and we can't make them to......

There should be a clause that resolutions passed with lets say 75% support in general body cannot be vetoed down. A handful of countries vetoing a decision which was reached after months of deliberations is utter non sense...

second that. UN is toothless organisation and should be done away with. make some new body which is more democratic and not a puppet of stronger nations

100% agree. I think that the UN permanent security seat system is unfair and undemocratic. However, so long as it does exist, it's better to have three Asian countries with veto power, so it's good that India is joining Russia and China now.

Yes but that does not mean we should accept status quo or propagate an unfair system

Thanking Ukraine.

India should take more effort for making good relationships with the developing countries and should set an example among the countries.

I say do away with the permanent seats and the veto system. The UN should be a body where all nations must be equal.

UN is getting weaker by the day mate. Wait for 10 more years and see how BRICS overshadows UN.

Thanks Ukraine for the support. Be sure we will return this favor in ways you'll love it. :)
