London - Britain's Ministry of Defence said on Monday it was investigating allegations that a soldier sliced off the fingers of dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan and kept them as macabre souvenirs.

The soldier from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, collected the keepsakes while he was serving in the restive southern province of Helmand.

"It seems he may have been chopping off the fingers of the dead Taliban fighters. There is a rumour that he may have wanted to keep them as souvenirs, which is macabre in the extreme," a source told the newspaper.

"These allegations have rocked the battalion. That said, they are being kept very hush hush for obvious reasons.

"Only one soldier is said to have been involved. The Afghanistan tour was his first one and it's possible that the stresses of that made him do these horrific things."

The soldier reportedly returned to Britain from Afghanistan earlier this year and is being investigating by the army's elite Special Investigation Branch.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: "We are aware of the allegations and an investigation is ongoing."

Britain has about 9 500 soldiers in Afghanistan as part of Nato forces fighting Taliban insurgents.

This is how the British help countries with issues. They should be ashamed of their actions. Every story like this creates more animosity and causes a reaction. Don't complain when you get what you deserve in return......

do not accuse the whole nation for the act of an individual.they have taken action against him or atleast they investigated the issue and let the news out!

If the fingers belonged to that of an innocent Afghan Civilian it would have been a serious war crime. But in this case the fingers belonged to some terrorists.

We cant verify who they belonged to. Its barbaric. Its ok to make assumptions that they belonged to terrorists? No criticism of rogue soldiers doing this? You have a great mindset

after we kill a terrorist its just body of human and human dead body should be treated as humans . when already he is killed no one should damn mess with dead .

On the contrary, it is clearly said that he kept Taliban fingers. Funny how you don't criticize when Taliban cut people's heads like vegetables and food items. But I see you're living in UK. It is common for you lot to criticize and hate the countries that give you good quality of life. I've seen this more than once, if there was any convincing needed. How typical of desertion... jahaan ka khaate ho waheen par thookte ho. :fie:

Here's an idea: how do you know it belongs to an innocent? Taliban told you that?

(although keeping fingers is disgusting from their decomposition point of view).

Sounds like something out of "Inglorious Basterds"!

On the side, keeping trophies has been in vogue since there is history. Greedy loot and plunder of the civilians of the defeated also has been a regular norm. Not just economic but also social and demographic destruction. Indians know it quite well.

On topic: IMHO, desecration of bodies should be avoided. Even if the combatant was as disgusting and inhuman as people who beheaded Daniel Pearl on camera besides other infamous video recordings just to make a statement of their bravery and some twisted understanding of faith.

So what ?let them keep as many fingers they find....it belongs to those animals called talibs anyway :what:.

Didn't some terrorists attack Indian Army last week and took head of Indian Soldiers as war trophies.I think that thread was created few weeks ago by Indian Members.Since Indians Members fully support this i assume they support that too!
