Abu Dhabi - Asharq Al-Awsat

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, met with the visiting German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, at Al Shati' Palace in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed welcomed the German Foreign Minister and discussed with him bilateral relations between the UAE and Germany.

They also discussed ways to enhance relations and strategic cooperation between the two sides in light of the distinguished ties and joint interests in the economic, investment, cultural, educational and social domains as well as joint cooperation in a number of regional and international issues.

They also exchanged views on the latest regional developments and their repercussions on the security and stability of the region as well as issues of mutual concerns.

The leaders also emphasized the two countries' desire to further enhance relations and joint cooperation as well as diversify the promising opportunities to achieve the aspirations of the two friendly peoples.

Sheikh Mohamed and Maas stressed the importance of achieving security, stability, peace and development for the peoples and countries of the region.

The UAE Foreign Minister said that for any (nuclear) agreement with Iran to succeed, “the region’s countries have to be part of it.”

“The agreement should cover broader issues, be it the ballistic missiles, terrorism support and interference in other countries’ internal matters,” Sheikh Abdullah said during a joint press conference with Maas.

On the sabotage acts against four tankers off Fujairah and within the UAE’s territorial waters, he described them as a threat to international navigation and an attack on the countries whose flags were flown by the vessels, such as Saudi Arabia and Norway.

well,,,,, a future total ban on nuclear proliferation in the region ?? .... if the regional countries wants to be part of 5+1 ? , which is not possible. Not very clear statement. Direct regional dialogue is best approach, rather messaging through others.

No, we need nuclear proliferation in the region. Every Arab country should have nukes. Non-Arab regional countries can have them too in my eyes. Nuclear weapons is the best assurance against major conflict and wars. Have any two nuclear powers ever fought against each other in an all-out war or have they mostly been small skirmishes or disagreements?

Pakistan and India had Kargil which was a small skirmish in the bigger picture. Nothing since. What happened in February was a small thing as well but was called the most tense in 20 years time.

Good luck implementing that policy with Israel around as well.

I am not against Iran developing nukes, my problem with their regime is the cancer that they spread in the region and a few select Arab countries. At the same time I believe that it is the right of KSA to have nuclear weapons (old technology anyway) and I hope that we are actively working towards that by implementing a real nuclear infrastructure by building 16 nuclear plants, extracting our own uranium as we are doing currently (we have 5% of all the world's uranium reserves) and mastering the nuclear fuel cycle. We already have at least 1 confirmed working nuclear reactor.

Our history, our huge assets (that need protection) entails this right as well as our size and population.

Why is it that a select few countries on the planet (less than 8 out of 200 countries) can have nukes but everyone else cannot or is prevented directly or indirectly?

I have been saying it for 100 years. If all Arab countries ganged up and cooperated on building nukes NOBODY would stop us. No sanctions would work either. The US would not attack/nuke a landmass the size of Russia either and 500 million people. Unfortunately our leaders of today are spineless compared to the leaders of the old. I have only hope in MbS trying to do something of all Arab leaders.

I say build nuclear reactors at the outskirts of Makkah and Madinah. Make anyone dare to attack them.
