US, NATO Troops Parade Near Russian Border in Estonia

rtr4qxq6.si.jpg

Troops and vehicles from U.S. and NATO regiments have taken part in a military parade during Estonia's Independence Day near the Russian border, in the first known official appearance of the forces so close to the former Cold War enemy.

Some 1,400 Estonian and multinational troops participated in the Tuesday parade in the eastern border town of Narva, separated from Russia by a narrow river. The annual independence parade is rotated between various Estonian towns.

It was the first time that American soldiers — based in the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia andLithuania — have paraded so close to the Russian border.

Estonia's military said Wednesday the usual flyovers by NATO fighters during such parades were not held because international regulations forbid military flights near international borders.

WASHINGTON–The Russian takeover of Crimea has transformed the security situation in the Black Sea for NATO ships and aircraft, the head of the US European Command and allied commander of NATO said on Wednesday.

"Crimea has been transformed in some fairly significant ways as far as weapon systems" Gen. Philip Breedlove told reporters in the Pentagon briefing room. "And these weapon systems, from air defense systems that reach nearly half of the Black Sea to surface attack systems that reach almost all the Black Sea area have made the platform of Crimea a great platform for power projection into this area."

Breedlove made his comments on a day when US and Russian forces made force demonstrations just miles apart on opposite sides of the Estonian border.

Elements of the US Army's Second Cavalry Regiment drove Stryker vehicles through the streets of Nava, Estonia, as part of a military parade to mark Estonia's Independence Day in the town on the Russian border, while at the same time 2,000 Russian paratroopers conducted exercises just over the border.

The American unit is in Estonia for a series of training exercises with the Estonian military.

NATO has stepped up its presence in Eastern Europe in recent months to assuage its allies close up against the Russian border, which are nervously looking at the Russian incursions into Ukraine.

Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee, Breedlove said that "in the current configuration I do not think that Ukrainian forces can stop a Russian advance in Eastern Ukraine…and to the degree that we can supply help, I'm not sure that they could stop a Russian advance in Eastern Ukraine even if we supply aid."

He refused to say that he supported arming Ukrainian forces with lethal weapons, but admitted on the Hill that "what we're doing now is not changing the results on the ground."

At the Pentagon, Breedlove said that Moscow has sent "more than 1,000 pieces of Russian military equipment" to Ukrainian separatists and Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, "including tanks, armored personnel carriers, heavy artillery pieces and other military vehicles and equipment."

And still, "it could get worse" he said.

On Feb. 26, the Ukrainian government began pulling heavy artillery pieces off of the front line as part of the ceasefire agreement forged earlier this month between the Kiev government and pro-Russian separatists in the eats who are being supplied by Moscow and bolstered by Russian troops.

While declining to state whether or not he favors arming the Ukrainian forces with more lethal weaponry, Breedlove said that he was convinced the US and NATO need to continue to develop plans to coordinate more effective diplomatic, military and economic tactics to blunt Russian president Putin's ambitions in the region.

"We don't want a war of grand proportions in Ukraine" he said. "We must find a diplomatic and political solution. What is clear is that this is not getting better" with the present strategy.

US Army soldiers will deploy to western Ukraine soon to being training local forces, and Washington has also started to provide heavier military equipment to the government in Kiev as well. In January, the US delivered the first prototype of an armored "Kozak" vehicle for use with the Ukrainian border guard, according to the US Embassy there.

A posting on a US government contracting site put the cost of the vehicle at $189,000.

The vehicle is built on a chassis manufactured by Italian company Iveco and features a V-shaped armored hull to help protect against mines and roadside bombs. The embassy said that to date, "the United States has delivered dozens of armored pickup trucks and vans to the Ukrainian Border Guard Service. The Kozak is larger and offers a higher level of protection."

How can you not be near Russias border, a country which has taken territory away from a hundred different countries, almost anywhere in Eurasia you can be near Russias border.

Name those "hundred" countries that had their land stolen. As for the question of massing soldiers near the Russian border, Estonia borders Russia but their is a difference between Estonian soldiers massing anywhere in their country and American soldiers massing yards from the Russian border. Before Ukraine is mentioned, this has been going on for years.

Some countries forget their own colonial past and blame others for imaginary invasions.

Estonia,Lithuania,Latvia,Finland,Sweden,Poland,Romania,Czechoslovakia,Ukraine,Georgia,Azerbaidjan,Japan,China,Crimean Khanate,Khanate of Bukhara,Khanate of Qasim,Iran,Astrahan Khanate,Khanate of Khiva.I'm sure i'll find some more if i dig deeper.

I'm pretty sure you know that the Estonians can't defend themselves against Russia but with the US there you really can't mass murder them like you did in the past.I'm sry if that causes butthurt in Moscow but you're just going to have to live with it.

Maybe India should disband its armies or withdraw them for the borders as not to upset its Pakistani or Chinese neighbours. You digg ? The only thing "imaginary" in here is you thinking you have a clue about history.Be retarded somewhere else pls.

If you mean India, than you need to thank the British as they joined together many states in India and formed the Indian Union. Which is now a country. As oppose to European Union or African Union, which are just organizations.

It's time for USA to bring home the troops from Europe. Let Europeans take care of themselves. We need to be more concern about our people and economy.

Your country and economy depend on those troops being there or anywhere else where they are today in the world. If you don't know that by now i'm afraid you have little knowledge of what your country really is or why it is what it is today.

We were one nation under many of our empires, buddy. British did nothing new. Guptas, Mauryan empire, 18th century Maratha empire etc had encompassed entire India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The form of governance was different in those times.

Maybe you should apply that logic to yourself considering that you have become the very thing you swore to fight against; oppression of freedom.

I was referring to the UK in particular.

Grow some self-respect for Romania, will you?

Your discussion about Romania is irelevant, exept that it further depicts you as a retard. You were "talking" about imaginary" Russian invasions....ergo,that made you look retarded.

All of your posts in this section are useless, you have no clues about the dinamics of the region, its history or geopolitics.Yours are only retarded rants with no value.

Bull. You spend too much tax dollars protecting your sorry *** when we should spend the money at home. I support that we bring home our troops. And we'll have more money to build up our country, which would provide jobs.

British created the Indian nation. All those other empires happen to be empires in the Indian subcontinent. But they are not Indian nation per say. India is like Western Europe, a civilization. But not a nation.

Oh,so naive...It's cute.

Sry dear, what you support doesn't matter. The American Empire can't function with troops "at hime and tax dollars for jobs" so that simple, naive souls can live at peace. The American empire survives if it controlos the EurAsian continent ,its trade routes and blocking the rise of another hegemon who could challenge its might. So,you see, simple views like yours don't matter, nor do mine to be realistical but I,unlike you ,at least see the world for what it is and don't hold illusions that simple slogans would make it better.

But...you know...you could write a letter to your congressman and tell him what you really feel.I'm sure it would be taken unto consideration.

Most of what you named are not countries, and it certainly is not a "hundred different countries". If we use your argument every country has "stollen" land, including Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Britain, ect. Since you are on team America, Explain how the US is any different from Russia. Dozens of Indian tribes not to mention Mexico had their land taken.

Estonia has done everything possible to not have friendly relations with Russia. In fact people can argue that Estonia has been hostile and antagonistic for over 20 years now. Before you pull the poor Estonian victim card, Russians and many other people in Europe suffered far more under the Germans then the Estonians did under the Soviets but the interesting thing is that Russians have no hard feelings towards Germans at all, most actually admire and respect Germans. Interesting how that works and just as interesting is that many former Soviet republics and Warsaw pact countries also have good relations with Russia. Estonia needs to grow; anyone that cries about the past especially if it was before they were born are attention seeking mental midgets.

Countries that maintain friendly relations are enslaved to be destroyed if they not obey their masters-see Ukraine. If you don't listen to Russia you get invaded in this part of Europe. The Estonians know it,we know it,the Poles know it.Nobody is "friendly" to Russia except Serbia.Hungary and Bulgaria have their goverments infected by tools.Truth be told, most of us in E. Europe are very willing "US pawns" because the alternative would be Russia. And Russia is a psycopath, always was and by the looks of it never changed. The Indians, the Pakistanis might cheer you like in this board but in this neck of Europe we know Russia and what it stands for,the Americans are no angels but they're boy scouts compared to Russians. All of your European neighbours in your proximity don't hold you in utter contempt "for no reason" or "because they're Nazis" as RT would like you to believe.

Ukraine, friendly? Ukraine was considered hostile under Viktor Yushchenko's presidency, most other presidents were more or less neutral. It is western propaganda that Yanukovych and Ukraine were "enslaved" or "puppets" under Russia, this is flatly dishonest, anyone claiming this does not know what they are talking about. Yanukovych was elected by the Ukrainian people, Russia had nothing to do with him being in power....nothing. As for Yanukovych, he was neutral, in fact he almost signed an EU agreement but decided not to when Russia gave a much better deal. So the question is how does a supposed puppet of Russia nearly sign a EU agreement? Irrational argument, as for puppets we all know who the puppet or puppets in Ukraine are, there is leaked audio and direct emissions from washington confirming this.

If you don't listen to Russia you get invaded in this part of Europe.

Answer an honest question. If washington and the EU did not interfere in Ukraine's internal affairs, would Russia have taken Crimea?

This also has nothing to do with listening to Russia, Ukraine was overthrown, Washington does not even deny it anymore; Washington has admitted that they brokered a change in power and invested billions. Not to mention audio leaks and US politicians having secret meetings with opposition leaders during Maiden riots. Still i love how no one seems to condemn this flagrant act, if Russia did the same thing it would not go unnoticed and in fact the US and Europe would probably hit Russia with sanctions. You know it very well yourself.
Crimea was a response to what Washington did in Ukraine, it would probably never would have happened if washington would have not interfered, the same thing goes for Maiden, if Maiden leaders would not have broken their agreements and simply grabbed power there would be less divide in the country, more voter turn out and elections that were a little more fair. There was early elections planned people seem to forget it.

And what About other countries such as Greece, Cyprus, ect? They are very friendly, and many other countries such as the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, ect have had excellent relations up until recently. I also do not know what you mean by, "Serbia.Hungary and Bulgaria have their goverments infected by tools" just because they don't have an outdated and self petty mentality that the Estonians have does not make then "tools", actually they are the total opposite, since they are not slaves to anyone.

No, Ukraine is not Nazi but many people in government are. Just like organizations such as the Azov battalion are now a part of the government. You keep ignoring these facts.

We give the countries back, Russia just extends its border, thats the difference.

As for the comment above, of course there are Nazis in Ukraine, I imagine Russia still has alot aswell, that mindset is far more prevalent in the East as its a far less multicultural place and like a paradox, the most racist people/places tend to be the least multicultural. I like Russia anyway, its just the annoying denial of Russia ever doing anything wrong that comes from anyone in the shitholes of the world who has a negative view of the US so for that reason see Russia as their protector when its the opposite, I have said before that Russia is the US of Eurasia, large populations, large military, history of selling arms to everyone and instigating proxy wars with vast intelligence networks, befriend nations for their own purposes.
