INCHEON, South Korea (Reuters) – A U.S. aircraft carrier group set off for Korean waters on Wednesday, a day after North Korea rained artillery shells on a South Korean island, in a move likely to enrage Pyongyang and unsettle its ally, China.

North Korea said the South provoked the Tuesday attack because shells from a South Korean military drill landed in the North's waters. In other words Live shells were fired from the ISland(SK) on N.korea. South Korea was holding its annual Hoguk military drill when the North started its shelling, and the South returned fire.

It also claimed that human shield were used by deploying civilians around artillery positions and inside military facilities before the launch of the provocation. The aircraft carrier USS George Washington, has already joined forces with South Korea's forces near the coasts of China and North Korea for the four-day military drill .

US is pushing South Korea for a military exercise to provoke the North. Should a full-blown war breakout, the devastation and casualty will not be in American soil but in the Pacific. The war will also generate US sales of arms to South Korea and nearby countries. Most South Koreans want US to stop meddling in their affairs but this message is being suppressed by mainstream news.

“Provoke the North?” Do you seriously believe that? Apart from North Korea’s revival of its nuclear enrichment program, in direct violation of promises it has made to the international community, in the past week alone, the world has witnessed an unprovoked attack by them against civilian population centers in the South. The US response to these provocations has been measured but firm, merely demonstrating we will stand by our ally and defend South Korea against such aggression. In the past fifty years, the U.S has played a vital role in building a stronger relationship with the South Koreans through mutual aid treaties, defense pacts and joint military exercises. As President Obama said in 2009, “South Korea is one of America's closest allies and greatest friends”. South Korea is our seventh-largest trade partner and is the 15th-largest economy in the world. Also, the U.S and South Korea share a Mutual Defense Treaty (1954) which states that the U.S will support and help South Korea against any external aggression.

Furthermore, the only ally of the North Korean government, China, has asked the United States to join a regional meeting in order to deal with the rising tensions caused by the north. Our current actions are a continuation of a policy we have had for decades, and which has until now helped maintain peace. Our hope now is that our resolve will convince the North Korean government to act in a more rational manner. Therefore, accusations of the US needing or wanting a war on the Korean peninsula reveal an ignorance of history and contemporary international relations. All those who believe these wars are helping our economy just need to look at the US economic downturn since the war on terrorism started. Regardless, we stand by our South Korean allies and will provide them any assistance they need to cope with the threat posed by North Korea.
