Turkey’s aviation and defense industry managed to boost its exports by 37 percent on an annual basis in January-May while the country’s overall exports recorded a 5.37 percent increase in the same period, reported Anadolu Agency, which compiled data from the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TİM).

In the first five months of 2019, the local aviation and defense industry’s export revenues amounted to $1 billion, up from $784 million a year ago.

Local defense companies’ main export market was the United States. Exports to this country exhibited a strong 20.8 percent increase to $353 million. Exports to Qatar soared more than 1,300 percent to hit $123 million.

Turkish aviation and defense companies delivered $108 million worth of goods to Germany in the first five months of this year, marking a 6.6 percent increase compared to the same period of 2018.

Shipments to Oman rose by 40 percent, reaching $101 million while the United Arab Emirates purchased $63.5 million worth of goods from local defense firms, a 1,800 percent increase from a year ago.

According to data, exports to the Netherlands were up 1.39 percent on an annual basis to $33.7 million but deliveries to India declined by 12.5 percent to $30.3 million.

Exports to the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia increased by 16.7 percent and 193 percent, respectively, to $27.6 million and 21.4 million.

Data also showed that Azerbaijan purchased $19.2 million worth of goods from local defense companies in January-May, a 19.3 percent increase from a year ago.

In January-May, Turkey’s overall exports rose by 5.37 percent to hit $76.6 billion. In May alone, the country’s exports hit the highest-ever monthly figure with $16.8 billion.

The foreign trade deficit stood at $10.5 billion in the first five months of 2019 versus a $36 billion deficit in January-May last year.

Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak welcomed the latest trade figures, saying: “God willing, Turkey will post a current account surplus in June.”

“We will strengthen our production and export-led economic model with steps in every area and put the current account issue out of our agenda,” Albayrak wrote on Twitter on June 3.

That says 140 million, that's not a whole lot compared to US companies lol.

Ehem, about weapons Export US is in his own league... you know it, I know it. So this comparation is not make sense. But anyway we increased our defence Export which it is welcome...

The "exports" to Qatar makes sense since they are bankrolling much of the Turkish industry and own up to 50% of some defense firms if I am not wrong, notwithstanding that Qatar will never use those weapons (and the 1000 times more powerful ones they are buying for billions from the US, France and Russia) but interested to see what KSA has imported. Can't be anything strategic and worth much given the tiny, tiny sum.

That says 140 million, that's not a whole lot compared to US companies lol.

There is a reason why only USA, China and Russia and at times France, UK and less so Germany use domestic weapons production as a source of income. For 99.9% of all other countries it is a tiny business. In fact if one wants to be harsh you can limit it only to the first 3 countries who all happen to be the superpowers. For a country like UK the hassle of producing what they are producing is barely outweighed by what they export. It is more about jobs than anything else and self-sufficency. Which, don't get me wrong, is commendable in itself and something that makes sense. But it is not something that will make any country rich not named the US and to a smaller extent Russia and China.

If I am not wrong, what the US spends on research and their military is nowhere near what they earn in terms of military sales. So even that is a stretch.

For a country like KSA it will be similar. Self-sufficiency (greater at least) and at times some pocket money from poorer countries.

It is more a political move to gain influence in country x or y and a way to create some kind of bond or trust that could extend to other sectors more than the state as such getting rich or earning big bucks on it.

Jordan makes 100+ million in a year from defense. I expected more from Turkey. If you want sources for this just ask me.

In a year? this article is not talking about an entire year, just some months... january-may - a billion dolar.
In 2018 we earned more than 2 billions dollars from Defence Exports... but still it is so tiny when you compere with US... like I said they are in their own league...

if you think about that Azeraijan makes over 300 million a year..
But Turkey exported 2 billion $ this year, but they also produced for local industries,, Turkey will increase its export crazy when their armored vehicle engine and helicopter engine, diesel engine for ships are ready.
Today Turkey simply can produce all other things except the engine which stop its export.
They already tested engine for armored vehicles and Helicopter. others will just follow them

Who does Azerbaijan export to?

like I said they are in their own league.

they will keep in their league.. they have a grip on many nations.. I dont see muslims having the brain and the heart to boost their economy and trade like the europeans do.. there is too much remote controlled states..

Good point, though engine is a complicated matter but im sure turk brothers will work it out. Countries like Turkey and Pakistan should make joint consortiums to export to smaller muslim countries. They all want to reduce depending on US. Weapons sale is not about earning money, it creates relationships and dependencies and leverages. All worth more than the money they earn.

Yes it is complicated, but not impossible with Turkish industrial Capacity... Today we are researching developing every kind of engine... (Drones, Helicopters, Tank engines, Cruse Missles, naval platforms etc) But it is not an easy task, Pd-170 our first engine for armed drones is ready... Our Atak's engine Ts-1400 and SOM cruise missle's engines are so close, but of course it will take more time and money but we will succeed.

About Pakistan, I always thought we shoud be like European Nations and we should research together make the defence equipments together and we should split R&D costs with this way... And I believe both Pakistan and Turkey wants that but because of Pakistan's economic problems, today Pakistan can not afford the money for R&D... Because you know R&D is not cheap and it will take years to gain back the money. In the end equipment will be cheaper with this way and you can even sell your systems and earn more money but first you have to pay for R&D... Of course I believe Pakistan's problems are temporary and after few years your economy will become better and both of this states will work together for R&D. Lets just hope for the best.
