ISLAMABAD: The worlds largest power ship will reach Karachi in November which will contribute 232 megawatts of electricity, somewhat helping address the woes of domestic and industrial consumers of the city.

The ship owned by Turkish company Karkey is the largest in size and installed capacity and will provide electricity to Lakhra Power Generation Company Limited, a subsidiary of Pakistan Electric Power Company, through the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC).

The Turkish company has guaranteed 93 per cent efficiency to provide for 60 months.

Basically a large generator set, running on diesel. Would it not be too costly? Is it a permanent setup or temporary one?

It is diesel generator ..but they all run on fuel oil(much cheaper)..though it would be much more costlier than for hydel, nuclear or coal..as oil is an imported commodity but it would still be much cheaper than electricity produced by Pakistan's own diesel generators(IPP , RPPs) ..as most of their equipment is old and have abysmal efficiency.

I think this turkish ship is comparably cost effective in case of disaster situations (like Haiti) where power network is destroyed or for short term supply to remote areas where power grid is absent.

I hope our Turkish brothers keep refining this product into a nuclear powered version(20 years without refueling, rather than needing diesel constantly), dozens of countries in the world have energy problems, most of Africa, and alot of Asian countries could benefit from this. It takes years to increase power production, and various countries could use this as a stop-gap measure.

Turkey should look into a nuclear powered ship - aircraft carriers often go for twenty years without needing to refuel, and can potentially provide much more megawatts. The US has relatively compact 300 mw reactor on it's nimitz class carriers, and carriers have alot of space constraints(can't fit in a huge reactor) - a purpose-built reactor could use say 80% of the ship's space and provide thousands of mw.

The idea has merrits, but under the current circumstances, turkey has yet to acquire it's first nuclear power plant, and conduct studies in that field before they can build one.

It's quite dangerous to deal with nuclear power without prior knowledge, but that's just my opinion.

And yes the Russian floating nuclear power has merrit, and can be very useful. But like it was pointed out, selfpropelled power plant is very nice during crises and such.

Not a single one, but a number of diesel Gensets running together and feeding the grid in parallel. The rated capacity is about 240 MW. Single D.G. set would be bigger than the ship itself.
Power generated by this method tends to be expensive, but it is a quick-fix solution.

Any way quite an innovative idea. Simmiler ships can be used quite freely, and as per demand, on our large coast line, particularly the towns with dockyards and ports.
