Tumultuous Year Ahead for Chinese Regime

China Jails Activist Writer, Another to Seek US Asylum

Chinese writer and democracy activist Li Tie has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after writing a series of essays urging citizens to defend their rights.

A relative of the activist says Li was found guilty of “subversion of state power” earlier this week by a court in central China.

The relative says Li maintained his innocence throughout the trial, and the court refused to allow him to choose his own attorney.

In a separate development, Chinese dissident writer Yu Jie says he will seek asylum in the United States, after undergoing torture in 2010 by police in his homeland because of his close association with jailed Chinese Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo.

Yu, speaking Wednesday in Washington, says he was detained several times in the past year and beaten so badly that he passed out. He also said he can no longer publish any work in China.

“Ever since Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao took office in 2004, I have been completely banned in China, I cannot publish any work, neither articles nor books. Other people are also barred from mentioning me in their public articles.

Yu also said he intends to write about Liu Xiaobo and about President Hu, despite facing jail time for doing so.

Wang Songlian of the Hong Kong-based Chinese Human Rights Defenders group tells VOA that Li Tie was jailed for posting online articles that criticized the government and promoted democracy.

“He was taken away by police quite a long time ago. And then he was tried in April last year and was not given a sentence until many months later, which was yesterday.”

Li is the third Chinese dissident in less than a month to receive a lengthy prison sentence on charges of inciting subversion. In December, Chinese courts gave a nine year prison sentence to veteran democracy activist Chen Wei and jailed fellow activist Chen Xi for 10 years after they posted online articles that the government deemed subversive.

U.S. Ambassador to Beijing Gary Locke said Monday that China's human-rights record is deteriorating in the face of pro-democracy protests in the Middle East. He said China's human-rights climate is “in a down period and it is getting worse.”

But China's foreign ministry rejected the claim. It said that Beijing respects human rights and is only arresting those in violation of Chinese law.

they will surely do that, the revolts are spreading all across America now and will be more in this new year.Arab Spring is the inspiration of the Wall Street Occupation movement, keep it up ,the whole world will support you.

Yeah, but the question is will you , the 50 cent army and your govt support it? You keep bringing our protests into a china topic as if it bothers us. We support freedom to protest. In china they get killed or thrown into jail for decades for ' peaceful protests' . You can learn how to be civilized from Pakistan too if you don't want to learn from us. They cherish their right to protest.

the indian and american regimes are pure evil.
they call themselves democracies yet they are no different than the nazi regime.
both those regimes are unstable.

the indian regime constantly denies independece to sikhs by oppressing and brutally murdering any sikh that seeks freedom from the pure evil hindu radicals.

the american regime uses police brutality to stop any protesters, wall street occupiers were brtutaly beaten and harrassed and many were humiliated just because they were excersing their right to protest because if u call yourself a democracy, then live up to its principle, otherwise dont call yourself a democracy.

the american regime is on thin ice, the middle class is shrinking, protests all over the country, people had enough of corruption within the american regime. the american regime is bought and paid by the banksters and wall street and jewish lobby groups. the common man is getting poorer and poorer.

vast majority of chinese people are happy the way the country is going, the chinese government has given jobs, improved the living standards of the people, built up the military to protect our sovreignty and territorial integrity from aggressive regimes, and over the last few decades have greatly enhanced the respect the world has towards china. we are a powerful nation and growing very fast, the job is far from finished, but its a long process.

A wave of large-scale strikes and protests in China during the first week of 2012 leads experts to predict that the Chinese communist regime will be facing increasing pressure from millions of disgruntled farmers, workers, and other disenfranchised groups this year.

Who are these stupid experts? Nowadays whenever I read "Experts predict XXX" I bang my head against screen. These type of protests are very common in China since years ago. We see this kind of strikes and protests probably 3000-4000 times a year. All these protests are against local company or local officials. There's a well-known Chinese ancient saying "Only against officials, not against the Emporer" describing this. People form this kind of protests usually to get higher government or Beijing's attention. These poor people are the most loyal people to CCP since they are afraid of chaos the most. It is some well-fed intellectuals who are questioning about the legitimacy of CCP.

This type of article is as valid as those "China will attach India in 201X" articles. If these experts ever visisted China or talked to the average Chinese, they'd know how absurt it is to make such kind of "prediction".

well said! those so called "experts" can never understand China's thousands of years old traditions and mentality.

i'd also like to note that unlike the emperors, we don't have any single person with absolute power, there is no grossly arbitrary use of power and there's no ridiculous personality worship. there is no face to "rebel" against.
