India deports US journalist for reporting on Kashmir

NEW DELHI: As the Indian government scurried to deal with a growing outrage about unmarked mass graves unearthed in Kashmir, it deported an American journalist on Friday who was known for his critical reporting of human rights violations in the Himalayan region.

Airport sources said David Barsamian, a radio journalist who has worked closely with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmed and Edward Saeed, was deported on his arrival at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport when he was accused of having violated visa norms during his previous visit to the country.

They alleged that he violated the rules during his visit in 2009-10 by indulging in professional work while holding a tourist visa. He was thereafter put on a watch by the immigration authorities to prevent his entry again.

Mr Barsamian has visited India regularly for more than three decades and speaks fluent Hindi and Urdu. He has reported extensively on the Kashmir resistance against Indian rule in their Himalayan homeland.

He is an accomplished sitar player.

Last November India deported Prof Richard Shapiro, an American academic, on charges of continued “political activism in the state while on a tourist visa”. More recently it has proactively blocked the entry of Indian journalists and human rights workers into Kashmir.

Prof Shapiro’s partner Angana Chatterji is involved with the International People’s Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir, which was the first whistleblower about the mass graves.

Ms Chatterji, an Indian citizen, was travelling with Prof Shapiro when he was denied entry.

Enough said.

So like if I'm in India on a tourist visa and log on to administrate this site, it would be a violation of the tourist visa norms?

This seems like a new fashionable statement "violated the tourism visa".

Can we go to the loo on the tourist visa? Are there loo rules defined in the visa?

He violated his tourist visa rules last time he visited India(by doing journalism work, which he must have gone back and broadcasted in America), so he can't come in this time on tourist visa.

Get a journalist/work visa and report your heart out.

Like what? A journalist is always on duty.

Well rules are rules. Every country has them. For India,

Journalists, Editors/Writers of Television networks and Radio Stations traveling to India on work or vacation are required to apply along with a copy of their Media Accreditation Card and/or a document from their organization describing clearly the nature of their work and whether they are traveling on work or as tourists.

Similar rules for America.

Vacation: A foreign media journalist, who does not have a media visa, can take vacation to the U.S. on a visitor visa, and would not need a media visa, as long a he/she would not be reporting on something newsworthy.

Visas for Members of the Foreign Media, Press, and Radio

then the visa should not have been granted, with a notice served, in fact journalist and Human rights groups are not Allowed in the troubled Indian occupied Kashmir. so they sought out other means to report abuses by the occupying military...and I am sure this must be appreciated that he took the risk of his life to report...

The question is, if a journalist declares his credentials...... would he get a visa and allowed to travel to say IOK. ??!!

He should come with a proper work visa.

Tourist visa norms are properly stated.

As per the extant instructions of the Government of India, a
Tourist Visa can only be granted to a foreigner who does not have a
residence or occupation in India and whose sole objective of visiting
India is recreation, sight seeing, casual visit to meet friends and
relatives etc. No other activity is permissible on a Tourist Visa.
The
Tourist Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible.

(a) The applicant should furnish an undertaking on the
following lines:- (i) That the purpose of his/her visit is because of
emergency situation.

(ii) That he is not engaged in Business activities, nor in
Employment or pursuing studies/research etc.

(b) In all such cases i.e. those covered by sub-para V above,
the foreign national should register himself with the
FRRO/FRO concerned within 14 days of arrival. This
registration may be done with the FRRO/FRO concerned
preferably at the first place of entry. An endorsement to
this effect will be made on the visa sticker.

A few obsessed or possessed ones seems to be advocating violation of laws in here.

Sorry mates, it ain't your country.

Oh please. How would Pakistan react, if some BLA leaders sent a bunch of hippie journalists to Balochistan. Would Pakistan allow them in?

A lot of foriegn correspondents report from Kashmir on a regular basis.

Press TV

Al Jazeera

exactly, it is not allowed, not even the human right watch group is allowed to go to IOK.

When I went to India, I was only allowed to visit four cities, & normally, a Pakistani citizen (or a person of Pakistani origin) has to go to the police station & report to the nearest police station, but I was exempted from that, because of my family connections in India & the fact that I'd been there before. Indian visa regulations are pretty strict.
