Trials for IAF's Multi-Role Tanker Transport Completed

IL-78.. restricted to drogue and probe.. less fuel efficient itself(ironic).. has ability to operate from spartan airbases.. and brings the advantage of commonality.

A-330 MRTT.. Efficient.. can refuel both hose and receptacle jets(useful if India makes the idiotic decision to go for the F-35)...streamlined operations..

^^^ not to mention the A-330 MRTT with the two options of refuelling could refuel the P-8I and C-17 the Indian armed forces are procuring. Given the final orders for both will be 24 (if not more) P-8I and 20 (probably a few more) C-17 India needs a means to refuel these especially the C-17 which is intended for power projection.

useful if India makes the idiotic decision to go for the F-35

Not going to happen, but as Abingdonboy said, we will need it for P8I and possibly C17s. Imo 6 is way too less for the requirement of IAF and IN aircraft and fighter fleets of the future and a more flexible to use MRTT fleet should be procured in numbers. The biggest advantage of the A330 is the fact that it can carry the same load of cargo of an IL 76, while it is in a tanker mission like the IL 78. So when FM is comparing them, they normally have to take 2 Russian aircrafts vs 1 A330.
My guess is, that the whole delay is just to get Boeing into the competition, because they are the only other supplier for tankers will both refuelling systems. The KC 767 is also cheaper (and smaller) than the A330, which would force Airbus to reduce it's price to be more competitive.
However, Boeing is mainly focusing on the US tanker deal, which is way bigger and so far there is no hint that they will join the competition again.

Agreed there is a lot in the box, but there was a time when we relied on russians for everything and they have also shared a lot of high tech stuff including the tech with us like the PAK FA or the Su30 mki's whichmost of the countries will not do. My question ishow fair is this on our part and their economy is not doing well.
Welcome to the 2012 buddy.... Make hay while the sun shines. Nothing in this world is free.
Their economy is not doing well is their mistake and how can we help them? Do u mean to say that they helped us back in1960's so let all military hardware orders to them even if it s below par?????

India completes more air refueling trials - UPI.com

NEW DELHI, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- India's air force has completed more trials of an EADS Airbus 330 and an Ilyushin 78 air-to-air refueling aircraft as part of its latest attempt to purchase six planes, likely for around $2 billion.

The capability assessment at Gwalior Air Base in north central India followed trials in Spain and Russia in July, a report by the Indian news Web site Rediff.com said.

The latest tender for a Multi-role Tanker Transport was reissued in September 2010, nine months after a similar MRTT contract featuring the same two tankers for around $1.06 billion was stopped.

India's finance ministry questioned the value for money offered during the previous tender issued in 2006. A major issue was the fact that the air force already operates six of the four-engine IL-78 tankers bought in 2004.

The Finance Ministry argued that buying more Ilyushins would be cheaper.

Despite this, the air force chose the Airbus 330 over the Il-78 in 2009. But the Finance Ministry quashed the deal in early 2010, saying a re-tender was needed using better procurement processes and assessment methods.

The Gwalior trials had the planes refueling Su-30MKI, Mirage 2000H and MiG-29 aircraft operated by the Indian air force, the Rediff report said.

Sealed bids from Airbus and Ilyushin will be opened later this year.

Last month, Russia and India signed a preliminary deal for Russia to sell 42 more Su-30 MKI fighter jets in kit form and provide technical assistance during their production.

The jets will be assembled in India by Hindustan Aeronautics. The aircraft's integrated electronic warfare system has a Tarang radar warning system made by the Indian government's Defense Research and Development Organization.

The Airbus A330 tanker is operated by Australia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

In November, Australia took delivery of its third A330 MRTT as part of a five-aircraft order. It was converted from an Airbus A330 jetliner airframe by Qantas Defense Services in Brisbane, Australia, Airbus said at the time.

Australia's fourth and fifth MRTT aircraft are scheduled for delivery this year.

Airbus's attempt to break into the U.S. defense market has suffered so far a similar fate to that its Indian experience.

The U.S. Air Force issued a request for proposal for 100 air-to-air tanker in 2006 and Airbus went head to head with Boeing and its 767.

Airbus, with its partner Northrop Grumman won the U.S. Air Force contract in mid 2008 but a complaint by Boeing over the lease agreement meant the tender was reissued in 2009.

Boeing won the $35 billion contract in February 2011.

many nations are interested in A-330 MRTT

like Saudi,Australia and uae
only china is purchasing il-78
actually A-330 MRTT have no-match with il-78
India already have il-78
