Woman who fell in well yet to be saved
TAIF: Rescue efforts are continuing to save a woman who fell inside a 50-meter-deep bore well in Taif seven days ago. An international company is now constructing another well nearby, but a huge rock has obstructed work at a depth of 18 meters.
According to informed sources, the company has stopped work on digging the second well, adding that this will delay the rescue of the woman, who has a child. The sources said it would take at least two more days to complete digging work for the new well.
The 29-year-old woman fell in the well while she was returning from an outing with relatives, said Salman Al-Otaibi, her husband who works in Jeddah. Al-Otaibi said he rushed to Taif soon after hearing about the incident.
Rescuers from the Civil Defense have been battling since Sunday night to rescue the woman from the well near the mountainous town of Shenaif, northeast of Taif, not far from her house.
People in the area have been anxiously waiting to see the woman rescued while many of them have lost hope because of the delay. Maj. Gen. Adel Zamzami, director of the Civil Defense in Makkah, has inspected the site of the well.
According to Lt. Col. Khaled Al-Qahtani, spokesman for the Taif Civil Defense, the 40-cm diameter artesian well is full of water, making the rescue all the more difficult.
When initial attempts to manually lift the woman out failed, the Civil Defense brought in advanced detection and rescue devices. Attempts to determine the exact location of the woman with the help of a thermal camera also failed.
Civil Defense officials have been consulting well experts to find a way to rescue the woman. According to one source, Saudi Aramco would take over digging the well near the well from the international company after conducting necessary studies about the areas geography.
Director of the Civil Defense in Taif Brig. Muhammad Al-Shehri is supervising the rescue operation.
