Enhancing connectivity through joint rivers is needed to increase trade, economy and tourism in and between the two neighbours, said speakers at an India-Bangladesh Chamber and Commerce Industry (IBCCI) on Wednesday.

“Waterways connectivity between Bangladesh and India through joint rivers is 10 times more cost-effective than roadways and five times more than railways for any trade among these two countries,” said IPAG Chairman Syed Munir Khasru at the ‘Enhancing Indo-Bangla waterways connectivity’ seminar at Hotel Sonargoan in Dhaka.

“Currently, the political situation is good and so is the relationship between India and Bangladesh. It is high time that we enhance the waterway connectivity to increase trade,” Syed Munir said.

Commerce Minister and chief guest at the seminar, Tofail Ahmed, went further, describing India as Bangladesh’s “trusted friend”. He said both countries have signed several deals that include waterway connectivity protocol and a coastal shipping agreement.

“We are working on developing the waterways connectivity for easy trade. We have also highlighted the roadways connectivity by BBIN agreement,” the minister said.

Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla said it was important to develop the Pangoan ICT terminal near Dhaka, Ashuganj and Godagari river ports near India for trade.

“The Indian government has signed an agreement for investing in Ashugonj river port but the process is getting delayed due to problems pertaining to land acquisition,” said Shringla, stating navigation as the most important element for business through waterways.

“We have some of significant developments to use waterways connectivity for trade, especially using coastal ship under the coastal shipping agreement.”

IBCCI President Taskeen Ahmed presented the opening remarks at the seminar.

It will require heavy and regular dredging of the waterways... In the current transit fees, I'm not sure how long these waterways will remain usable...

Another potential route for illegals. But a good thing provided water maintains a minimal flow all through the year
Potential is about buying capacity which remains limited in Bangladesh.
Actually the most important aspect of this news is that it should be a potent excuse to ban all Indian overland transit through BD.If India want to transport goods to and from North east other than Siliguri corridor than she should use Chittagong and Kolkata port. For this purpose Bangladesh can be generous to built a railway from Chittagong port upto Tripura border.

BD is too weak to ban anything that is advantage to India.

SHW/BAL are our loyal minions.

Of course some wont like to hear the waterway news since they are dreaming of overland trade with china being a big deal for puny BD

Rivers when flowing faster in the rainy season will naturally scour and dredge themselves.

However I believe man-made dredging occurs more routinely and in more places in Bangladesh than in India. Notice the recent flooding in Bihar which resulted from long neglect.

There may be some dredging occurring near Haldia to help navigation and prevent shoals from forming. But its occasional.

True, but I guess the existing waterways of Bangladesh will have to be expanded to allow the transit to India. Moreover, a large part of the waterways are treated seasonal, they will need continuous dredging to be usable year-round....

India cannot construct dam on entire river. That's virtually impossible. Dams can be constructed on some branches. :)
Every damn thing is possible for India. If it cannot dam a river it will perhaps mix poison at the upper reach to kill us with diseases.
