Top economic planner approves 6 bln-USD airport expansion project in Xinjiang Province

Xinhua, November 19, 2018

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner on Monday said that it had approved an airport expansion project in Urumqi, capital of the northwestern Xinjiang Province.

With a total investment of 42.1 billion yuan (about 6.1 billion U.S. dollars), the project will expand the Urumqi Diwopu International Airport to meet the demand of the region's rapidly growing aviation market, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

A new terminal covering 500,000 square meters, and two new runways will be built.

After the expansion, the airport will be able to handle 63 million passengers and 750,000 tonnes of cargo and mail by 2030.

The NDRC approved nine fixed-asset investment projects in October with a combined investment of 91.8 billion yuan, primarily in transport and energy.

Fixed-asset investment, one of the major drivers of China's economy, posted growth of 5.7 percent in the first 10 months, up from 5.4 percent in the first nine months, according the National Bureau of Statistics. Enditem

That's rather strange. Do you think that it is possible for Urumqi to emerge as a major international aviation hub in the near future? I know it has extensive mining and mineral-rich economic sector, but an aviation sector is much more than that.

Making such a huge investment for infrastructure project credentials will really have long-term ramifications for the economy without proper passenger-cargo movement study.

Yes, it is. It is being now situated as the most developed city in Central Asia (probably also South Asia combined).

The Central Asia hub of the Belt and Road is Xinjiang. And there is already a tourism boom, with over 130 million domestic and and foreign tourists in the first ten month of 2018.

If Xinjiang cannot be a hub, I do not know which city in Central Asia can.

I was thinking more along the lines of Hainan island as a challenger to southeast Asian hubs being in the same region.

I thought Kashgar was the hub of the OBOR initiative.

It is an incredible city you've built in the middle of such a challenging terrain.

Hope your efforts pay off well; at least for the sake of manpower and resources that you have heavily invested there.

I think different cities have different functions. Altogether they form a network, complementing various functions for the BRI.

It is impossible to assign the entire BRI role to one single city, BRI being such a comprehensive initiative.

Xinjiang Province as a whole is designated as the hub.
